And then, there's the rumored Type 054B FFGs...
Well, at some point the PLAN will build a new FFG design beyond the Type 054A.

Whether it is 054B or not...we just do not know yet.

One thing is for sure, the Type 054A has been a very successful design and serial production for them. They are really the main stay and bulk of the modern PLAN major combatant surface fleet right now.

That article states clearly that the statements about the A++ is...

In other words, they have no idea if it is true or not.

And I can tell you that from the pics that the CIWS is not a Type 1130, and I do not believe the PLAN would have any intention of placing one on the Type 054A FFGs in any case.

I was nodding with approval when I read what you said, thinking that Type 1130 would be overkill.... But this came out today, and I'll be damned, but that does look like Type 1130!

I have to agree with their logic: it's a lot cheaper to upgrade to a more powerful CIWS that can deal with supersonic AShM threats than to replace a sunken ship.

You can see that between the 4th 568 and the 5th 571 there is a pause of almost 2 years. And 568 and before featured a round and flared bow while the 571 onwards have the angular bow like the 054.

I don't think that alone is what accounted for the pause so maybe 571 onwards have a good deal of improvements over 568 and before.

No question about it, you can't have a production run this long without having incremental improvements over learning from the previous units

I would be seriously worried about Chinas ability to learn from production process if all the Type 054A were exactly the same

They build they learn and they inco operate this learning into the future units and we see changes as we go

i'm not sure what counts as 054B, but the 9th and 10th 054As from the two shipyards are already different from the earlier 054As.

When I look at that pic, it clearly does not have 11 barrels. Looks more like 7 to me.

I have to go with by78 on this one. While it is a little difficult to count the individual barrels, the overall diameter of all barrels together is far thicker than that of a type730.

More importantly, the ciws on this 054A has an ammo barrel on the left side as well as the right, consistent with type 1130 rather than type 730 which only has it on the right.

Compare this

And this

The second ciws is much closer in appearance to by78s picture. In fact they are identical down to the rivet and bolt
