With Chinese destroyer, and naval production in general, now hitting a sweet-spot, any chance we see the Sovremennys going back to Russia?

The Sovs were bought from Russia, not leased. If you're suggesting China should re sell the Sovs back to Russia, it's probably more trouble than it's worth and I doubt Russia would be very interested either. Better off to just modernize the Sovs with some indigenous communications and other subsystems. They're not exactly the most modern or easiest to maintain ships in the PLAN, but they still have some relatively unique capabilities, in their Moskits for anti surface missions and also AK-130s for naval gunfire support.

If the Shtil SAM launchers can be replaced with even a few 8 cell VLS modules, it could give the Sovs new life to fire LACMs like DH-10. If the Sovs get a radar upgrade as well then even better.

But I expect only a communications, command and relatively light subsystem upgrade, possibly with a few radars replaced. probably no new radar.

Yes, I'm aware that they were purchased, outright. My question was based in my understanding that, while China is presently fulfilling its naval production goals, Russia is not. You might be correct in your assessment. But (and, without trying to raise any hackles), Russian surface combatant strength and production are less than impressive, right now, and four familiar platforms might serve to restore some lost capacity and confidence.

It's just a thought!

Russia has quite a finite budget for its military, and I think they won't see much use in taking back four Sovs when they are committed to building a good number of modern frigates and are already committed to modernizing a number of its larger soviet era ships like its kirovs, kuznetsov, and slavas. Once we approach 2020 they'll start to build their planned Leader class DDG to replace their larger surface combatants.
It's a question of cost and capacity versus capability, and what four modernized sovs offer to the table for the Russians probably isn't worth the money or the time and manpower.

there is really no reason for the Chinese to want to sell the Sovs and no reason for the Russians to want to take them back, not at the current state of both navies anyway.
