It's part of superstructure, it has very light roof.

Also, placing CIWS behind VLS/close to superstructure is rather suboptimal.
You only get narrow angles to both sides where they can be in use simultaneously.

But that's the standard location for (gun) CIWS on 052D and 055?

More space, and superstructure is cut rather than straightline from side to side.

But yes, this isn't ideal there (or anywhere). Ideally you want something like Horizon, but it's heavy and expensive for what ultimately is a secondary system.

Maybe war will force everyone to reconsider, like it happened during WW2.

And the "boxes" on the bridge similar to Type 054AG AESA fcr but a bit different. Might be EW or datalink?
Interesting. Two "old style" radar illuminators have been retained on top of the bridge, but I don't see any on the aft superstructure. This means 6 targets illuminated simultaneously against 4 on 054A.

Eh, if CIWS are playing a big role instead of only intercepting the occasional leaker, then something has already gone very wrong beforehand. They'd also just run out of ammo.

I was wrong, there are 2 "old" illuminators aft. Could it still be that 2 "boxes" on top of the bridge are additional illuminators? They look very much like the ones on 054AG.

Doesn't make sense to have both so it's probably EW or datalink. If it is HQ-16 related, it could be datalink for HQ-16FE. Allowing 052B to use both legacy SARH HQ-16s and ARH HQ-16FE to max range.
