Good work Jeff, reason I didn't add in the Sovs were because I'm not sure how well China can upgrade these ships when compared to the other indigenous ships, the Sovs will be a headache really but again i am not sure, maybe they can strip them down and re do the lot from bottom up but that would be expensive, I mean were they even built in China, I think Russia launched them all

Agree, but the Sovs, especially the last two are very capable destroyers. The Sunburns are very potent

Not sure whether the Sunburns can get the target data from Chinese radar, but heyyyy .. the Chinese will find a way, they are well known to reverse engineer almost anything you can think of. Even without Chinese radars, they are still very capable AShM and DDG

I do understand the Sovs engines are not too "good" for long journey. But they are more than capable for 1st chain island, including all Japan, SK and Taiwan .. and hmmmm let alone the Philippine and Vietnam :)

re: PLAN Type 052 Class Destroyer

Then you add the six Lanzhou vessels (Type 052C) and then another six "D" that will be launched by 2015, and in 2015 you end up with:

2 Type 052
1 Type 051B
4 Sovs
2 Type 052B
2 Type 051C
6 Type 052C
6 Type 052 D

That's 23 modern and effective DDGs

On the guided-missile frigate side you end up with:

20 Type 054A
02 Type 054

Or 22 modern and capable FFGs.

I believe by 2015 there could be as many as 30 Type 056 OPVs too.

That becomes a very potent and effective surface force with 23 DDGs, 22 FFGs, and 30 OPVs. 75 major surface combatants in all. As large as the Japanese Navy and with just as many new vessels.

By 2020, the picture is even more advanced for the PLAN. With more Type 052Ds, probably a few Type 055 CGs, probably several Type 054B FFGs and more Type 056 OPVs. Heck, the PLAN may have over 100 modern, majopr surface combatants by 2020...and that does not take into consideration their growing SSK and SSN force, their Amphibious force, or their carriers.

You can add 053 FFGs (053H2G/053H3) also which IMHO will remain active by the end of the decade with some modifications. So the breakup will be:

DDG:
01 - 051B
02 - 051C
02 - 052
02 - 052B
04 - SOUVs
06 - 052C
06 - 052D

Total - 23 DDGs by 2015

FFG:
04 - 053H2G
10 - 053H3
02 - 054
22 - 054A

Total - 38 FFGs by 2015

OPV:

30 plus 056.

Hey, could you or one of the other mods please move the last few posts about the Sovs to the appropriate thread so the discussion could continue?
