This just shows you have no idea how DEW works, efficiency of these large scale lasers are miserable, somewhere between 15 percent to 30 percent. Future multi-megawatt class DEW is going to take dozens of MW actual input to run and support and you are going to want more than one of these on your carrier.

I'm very aware of the numbers. Dragonfire is a 50 KW laser with a total power draw of 300 KW, and that should be scalable.

So what do you expect to do with a multi-megawatt class DEW?

Remember the 1 MW Airborne Laser was already designed to shoot down ballistic missiles.

---

And if you look at the Type-055 numbers, it should comfortably support a 3MW laser with a 18 MW total power draw.

---

And remember that the space required for a large laser will come at the expense of valuable deck space on a carrier. Plus you will need a better radar and laser-targeting system on the carrier as well.

That is a big reason why medium-range and long-range air defence is shifted onto the escorts.

Advanced DEW could replace kinetic CWIS and Ford has quite of bit of extra deckspace on the lower deck to mount larger weapons. There is no reason for engineers to design Ford with a massive power capacity without good reason.

I fully expect DEW to replace kinetic CIWS.
But look at the future DDG(X) design. They're listing a potential upgrade to lasers of 150KW or 600KW.

There is no reason for engineers to design Ford with a massive power capacity without good reason.

Remember when the Ford was designed. It was concurrent with the era of the LCS and Zumwalt madness.

Overspecifying future electricity requirements is downright sane in comparison.
