has said the NDA government will buy only 36 of the French aircraft, to be used for strategic purposes, and no more.

Parrikar also raised questions on the tendering process initiated by former Defence Minister A K Antony and said his predecessor had "hammered" the tender in such a way that the Rafale deal would have never seen the light of the day.

Rejecting criticism from the Congress that Prime Minister

had bypassed the Finance Ministry and the Defence Acquisition Council, the apex body of the Defence Ministry that takes the call on military projects, Parrikar said "the deal is yet to be inked" and they should hold their horses till the process was complete.

He expressed confidence that the Committee, that has been set up to work out the contract, would complete the task in the next 2-3 months.

The Modi government has scrapped the over USD 20 billion deal for 126 Rafales more than three years after Dassault was declared the lowest bidder under UPA's tenure.

During his visit to France last month, the Prime Minister announced the decision to buy 36 of these jets in a fly-away condition under a government-to-government (G2G) contract.

Parrikar underlined that the decision to acquire 36 Rafales came in view of the "urgent requirement" of Indian Air Force.

"We are not buying the rest. We are only buying the direct 36," Parrikar said when asked what will happen to rest of the requirement.

He said that the UPA deal for 126 Rafales was way too expensive and it would have hampered other modernisation plans of the Indian military.

The deal would have required around Rs 1.3 lakh crore over a period of 10-11 years, he added.

"Would there be any money for any other work?" he asked.

"I also feel like having a BMW and Mercedes. But I don't because I can't afford it. First I can't afford it and second I don't need it. So, 126 Rafales was economically unviable. It was not required," Parrikar said
.

Attacking Antony over the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft tendering process, Parrikar said that his UPA predecessor had "hammered" the tender in such a way that the Rafales would have never seen the light of day.

He also wondered why Antony was trying to force the French firm Dassault Aviation, manufacturer of the Rafale, to come back to him even after it was selected as the lowest bidder.

"After L1 was determined, he said go ahead with cost negotiations and, after negotiations are complete, go back and check on methodology of L1, whether it was correct or not? "Why did it happen? There are only two reasons. You are forcing your supplier to come back to you. What is the reason? He (Antony) should answer," Parrikar said refusing to elaborate further.

The minister underlined that Rafales are not a replacement for MiG-21s. He said that the MiGs would be replaced by the indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft.

Explaining the strike capability of the Rafales and the kind of weapons it is fitted with, Parrikar said the French fighter jet was a "deep-striking fourth generation plus" aircraft.

Asked if the Rafale deal meant that the Modi government will only go through

deals for strategic assets in defence, Parrikar said the Defence Procurement Procedure does not prevent the government from using the G2G route.

"That Rafale deal (MMRCA) of his (Antony) through RFP would have never seen the light of the day. Wherever there is a need of defence of this country, I will not hesitate to advise the Prime Minister to go for government-to-government deal," he said.

Thum! Kaun Ata Hai? said:
Undocking of INS Vikrant (IAC-1) has been pushed back to Monday, June 1, 2015. The aircraft carrier was to have undocked on Saturday, May 30 on completion of phase 2 structural build up. In preparation, the carrier - which will displace 40,000 ton on completion, but currently weighs just 26,000 tons - was loaded with ballast and flooding of the bay dock initiated on Friday, May 29, 2015.

However, undocking had to be pushed back to Monday due to unfavorable tide, unforeseen accumulation of silt, and a problem with lowering the building bay dock gate, which was last operated when the ship was brought in a year-and-a-half ago.

All major equipment has been fitted into the vessel, which has now acquired the shape of an aircraft carrier, with a finished hull.

Following undocking, for the next year-and-a-half INS Vikrant would be fitted with abling, piping, accommodation facility, air conditioning and ventilation systems as part of Phase-2 construction.

The equipment fitted on the carrier will be operated only towards the end of Phase-2 construction. Basin trials will commence in 2017 for eventual delivery in end-2018.

IAC-1 was officially launched on August 12, 2013 with over 80% of the structure completed; the ship was fitted with its two LM2500 Gas Turbines developing a total power of 80 MW, diesel alternators capable of producing about 24 MW and main gear box.

Following launch, the ship was moved out of the building dock and positioned in the refitting dock for the next Phase of outfitting. (The building dock cannot accommodate over 20,000 ton displacement)

Well, while we continue to wait for pics from the INS Vikrant undocking, I thought I would give a few pictures of the other newer Indian Carrier, the INS Vikramaditya, which was refurbished from the Russian Gorshkov into a STOBAR carrier and has been operational for some time now.

We see her exercising fairly regularly and with more and more Mig-29Ks aboard. I have seen up to seven aboard at one time now:

...and let's not forget their other Indian carrier that they still operate like this:

...and that they have now operated joint carrier exercises on a few occasions with both:

Just something as we wait for the undocking of the INS Virkant, their first indigenous carrier.

Janes is reporting that India maybe looking to cancel its multi caliber rifle competition.

No recourses are given and considering the INSAS is... Prone to jamming, over weight, poorly built, lacks any accessory rails and generally hated by the Indian troops regarded as the bastard child of the AK and was recently pulled from service in the front line of Cashmere. One wonders just what in the heck is going on? Also there given reason boggles the mind. "none of the entered competing foreign made weapons were of necessary quality?
they were looking at a Colt made variant of the M4A1.
The IWI ACE
Berretta ARX160
CZ 805 Bren II
Each is a respected maker, each offering has been on the market for maybe 10 years max and each one makes the INSAS look like something a caveman would use. Currently Indian military service uses three main choices of rifle the Insas... Akms and IwI Tavor

Well maybe. The Indian MOD has its act together. Best case I see is that they decided to just general issue the IWI Tavor/X95 that they already license and issue to there SF and elite units. Second best is they miraculously pulled off a indigenous replacement... Not likey worst case INSAS.

Okay, some friends in India have been checking into this and they tell me that the undocking of the Vikrant is probably still a couple of days away because of a dredging effort to address a dry dock gate hinge glitch of some type. Nothing associated with the vessel itself.

So...hurry up and wait.

Yes. In the post directly above the one you posted I gave an update.

It says:
