China also have official scholarly journals published on the new defence developments. If you can read chinese 中国国防科学技术研究院 are responsible for publishing the results of these researches.

There are some good articles to read on Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense.


With foreign PLA watchers the problem arise when they can access the info or if can't read chinese... Their sources thus become very narrow...

Tian Jin university have a online database of archieved official chinese defence industy articles.

Thank you for all that information. But the bottom line is that I cannot read Chinese..I'm just a dumb American.

I'm sure that the PRC has lot's of military technology in the R & D stage. I just don't know ....for sure.... what it is.

I would really like to know.

FreeAsia.. thanks for posting that article. It comes from Naval Proceedings which in my opinion is a magazine written by officers that are looking for "feathers in their caps"..They are trying to get promoted and make their name know. Much of they publish is true..some is pure guess work. The fact that the officer points out that the USN may know some PLAN ASW tactics shows that USN has long been training for some sort of confrontation with the PLAN.

I hope and pray that day never comes.

Maybe we are going to see a '12-12-12-12-12' pattern for PLAN SSKs?

12 Kilos, 12 Songs (as though there are 10 built, there is still evidence of one or two more popping up), 12 Mings (as the modern boats continue to serve), and 12 Romeo 033s (those boats that remain to have some hull life and are modernized), perhaps we might see 12 Yuans. If China could turn out 10-12 Songs in 6 years, I do not see why China can't do the same to Yuan by 2015.

This is quite realistic, giving China 60 relatively modern SSKs. Of course, if you count out the Romeos and Mings, you still got 36 SSKs thats quite a formidable force.

　　潜艇采用低速大扭矩直流电机直接驱动一个七叶大弯角螺旋桨，使最高航速由原来的25节，提高到了33节。另外，由于安装了“减震浮筏”，大大降低了动力系统的噪音。航速33节时，其噪声是115分贝，低于美国“洛杉矶”攻击核潜艇的120分贝。

　　“汉级”核潜艇使用核电推进方式。54万千瓦电池组充满电能后，可以关闭反应堆。电池组足以让潜艇全速潜航10个小时，可以同美国的“海狼”级核潜艇媲美。如果以经济航速11节航行，更可潜航数百小时，噪声才95分贝，接近海洋的背景噪音。

　　此外，由于装备了侦察声纳软件，该潜艇的测向精度大增，能边搜索边跟踪，同时攻击多个目标，性能方面达到了世界先进水平。

Don't know how credible or significant is this report but it does quote Janes.
Looks like PLAN is still working on the old Hans. It claims the latest 5th boat is 115 decibel at 33 knots, better than LA class. And when the battery is charged, the reactor can be shut down. It can run at low speed of 11 knots for hundreds of hrs with 95 decibels, approaching the level of Seawolf.

no credibility at all, just your usual rumour on Chinese military sites. The worst part is that these news keep on getting recycled, so you see them popping up every few months.

Exactly! Well said Tphuang..We see the same old stuff over and over again. Post something new and fresh why dontcha?????

Why can't the PLAN do something like this..(this was previously posted) publish some up-to-date info like this article aboput the new improved sonar sensors on all USN subs. ?????.



I will tell you why. They have nothing new. Or they are very secretive. I thinks it's a combination of little of both...

I think it is more of combination of they don't have anything new.

Even if they do, the PLAN will still not have a SSN on equal terms with the Los Angeles or Trafelgar, or even the Akula.

And I'm not even talking about the Sea Wolf or Virginia.

Horray!!! #8 kilo is here, finally fufilling the contract that was signed four years ago. Personally, i think this is the last submarine china will recieve from russia, unless the russians make somethign really good.

ST. PETERSBURG. June 1 (Interfax) - The Admiralty Shipyards transferred a
diesel-and-electric-powered submarine of project 636 (Kilo) to China this week,
said the press service of the St. Petersburg Economic Development, Industrial
Policy and Trade Committee.

The first submarine was transferred to China in 2004. Overall, the shipyard
has built five submarines for China under a contract signed between
Rosoboronexport and the Chinese Navy in May 2002.

The contract is worth $1.5 billion. It was agreed that five submarines would
be supplied by the Admiralty Shipyard, two by the Sevmash shipyard based in
Severodvinsk in the Arkhangelsk region, and one by the Krasnoye Sormovo
shipyard based in Nizhny Novgorod.

The Admiralty Shipyards builds submarines and oil tankers.
