Yuan Class AIP & Kilo Submarine Thread

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I don't think we can call this Yuan or 039B anymore. The sail looks to be completely different than the previous ones. It reminds me more of the Type 032 sail to be honest. The hump looks different too and so does the bow from what I can see.

I think the design of the pressure hull is more important in defining a class rather than exterior features. Also, the sail looks to be a modification of Yuan's existing sail rather than a radical redesign, unlike the sail on this conceptual model.

Hmmm maybe this IS the modified Yuan that we're seeing with the new sail.

Okay, that's an "X" configuration on the stern planes.

There are only a few current SSK classes that include that.

The first were the Gotland's from Sweden. They displace 1,600 tons. There were three built. This is the class that the US Navy leased/hired for over two years between 2005-2007 to study, test against, and develop better detection capabilities for.

Swedish Gotland Class SSK

The German Type 212A SSK. Displace 1,830 tons. Six have been launched for Germany and four are in service with two outfitting. Two have been launched and are in service for Italy. Two more Italian boats planned.

The second two Israeli Dolphin Class (which are a development of the Type 212). Displace 2,300 tons. Two in service.

The Japanese Sōryū Class SSK. Displace 4,200 tons. Six have been launched with five in service. Two more under construction and a ninth is planned.

DCNS in France has proposed the Andrasta Class, "Coastal Class" SSK, which would displace about 1,200 tons. No orders yet.

If the PLAN is building a new AIP SSK with this "X" configuration on the stern planes, that will be a very impressive, modern design. It would be nice to know her specs. When they launch her, we will immediately be able to tell as those stern planes will be out of the water at that angle.

It's a popular feature these days not just on SSK but the latest SSN and projected SSBN also seem to be sporting X style

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

That is a very nice looking design.

It that the actual design of the new Yuan we saw?

Can someone translate the Chinese there?

I think I see:

Displacement: 3,400 tons (submerged)
Length: 80 m
Beam: 10 m
Tubes: 533mm x 6
Weapons: 21 Torpedoes

Says it has AIP.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

It's very similar to soryu class, such as its sonar dome, even its x tail, etc. So I doubt the picture's authenticity.

Speed 13 knots surface, 21 knots submerged, 10 knots AIP mode
Depth: 450M
Duration: 60 days
Crew: 50

It says at the bottom right: "Future Chinese 3000 ton class standard submarine with AIP"

The 50 crew seems low for Chinese standards.
