BBC reported that the Japanese initially detected a submarine with "unidentified" nationality. So I guess that the 093A was still detected, but the nationality of the submarined could not be sure until the sub actually surfaced.

Or the P3 radar detected the surfaced sub. Weren't sure of the nationality till it raised the flag

Still, just wondering, shouldn't the JMSDF pilots be able to instantly recognize that submarine is a 093A once they spotted the shape of the vessel? I assumed that most trained military pilots should be able to recognize the majority of rivals' hardware.

I'm not sure if the "09IIIA" needs its own subtype designation, since that sail cusp could easily just be a refit of an existing boat. Unless of course there are other unique defining features besides the sail cusp.

Not just surfaced, it is literally advertising itself. Even the the flag is up.

I feel its scripted on purpose, especially with the Type 054A on the area, and since last month when PLAAF and PLANAF has been sending sorties, using Y-8s, H-6s, Su-30s, and J-11s, to this area.

Indeed and on several reports they mention only 093 and 093B or G nothing for A a supplementary proof than 093A is normaly not new but a 093 upgraded

Quite sure Blogger do error but is is very difficult
