, to experiment with sonar and underwater acoustics.

The institute under state-owned China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation employs civilian and military personnel.

CCTV said the three and others had rushed to the dock to prepare for the typhoon that hit China last weekend. It said the drowning victims were Huang Qun, the institute's deputy director, project leader Song Yuecai, and electromechanical engineer Jiang Kaibin.

High waves that had loosened the ship's cables threw them into the sea and attempts to revive them failed. A moment of silence was held for them by leaders of the corporation on Tuesday.

China’s navy and coast guard are building ships at a blinding pace, challenging U.S. naval dominance in Asia with the deployment of aircraft carriers and advanced submarines.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on all members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to learn from three late comrades from a research institute, stressing patriotism.

The three comrades -- Huang Qun, Song Yuecai and Jiang Kaibin -- who worked for the 760 Research Institute of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, sacrificed their lives to protect a national experimental platform during Typhoon Rumbia, when it passed through Dalian, a coastal city of northeast China's Liaoning Province, on Aug. 20.

All Party members should draw strength from the three late comrades, have firm ideals and convictions, remain true to their original aspiration, keep their mission firmly in mind, perform their duty scrupulously, be loyal to the Party and make contributions to the country, said Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.

With all due respect no one should put life over machine

Machines can be replaced while men can’t

Sad to see people sacrificing their lives for material gain big no no
Agreed in this case and many others that are related. China has to forgo the notion that physical/mental loss of employees as a sign of diligence or progress, but rather one of over zealousness and pointless waste of lives.

I don't believe they intended to die. Their obvious plans was to save the boat and go back home, and the rest was a major miscalculation of how severe a typhoon can be.
