No aircraft on deck, but great photo nonetheless:

So apparently this picture was taken 2 years ago before the J-15 went into serial production so this explains why there are no fighters on deck.

I'm not sure you can make that presumption. It is not clear that they are the same pictures...only similar.

When a carrier elves its home port and heads out to sea for an exercise or mission, it generally has no aircraft aboard. They fly aboard from their own base as the carrier gets out to sea.

I tis not unusual for carriers, particularly if they are planning to be in a maintenance period, a refit, or a long R&R at home, to have the entire air wing off of the carrier at their own bases.

jkliz, here on SD StopSquarkS posted the pic in question:

HERE

Since being posted, and before my comment, it has never been indicated that the original picture was two years old . StopSquarks certainly has not done so since posting it.

Then, a few posts ago, no-name, indicated that there was a similar picture from 2013

HERE

This is why I said what I said.

On this thread there is no post from the source you reference...nothing to indicate that the original picture is two years old.

Even if that is so...it makes little difference to my statement. Two years ago the Liaoning was operating with prototypes regularly and could easily have been on the carrier if it was out at sea exercising.

IMHO, as I said, it's more likely that the aircraft had simply not flown onto the carrier yet.

Oh very sorry. I should have mentioned this photo was posted first on another chinese defence blog in which the poster stated it was 2 years ago.

No worries. Can you link to that location? Is the poster who is claiming that it is two years old the one who took the picture?...can he show it posted back then?

As I say, either way, it does not necessarily mean that there were no aircraft available. More likely that either they were conducting a pure maneuvering exercise, or that the prototype aircraft they had been using simply had not flown aboard yet.

If you look through the PLAAF parade thread, you will find tons and of pics of multiple J-15's flying in formation. Good evidence that they are involved.
I am Half convinced that if the Admrialty and Leadership could build the Crawlers and find a crain to lift it and get it to Bejing on time, they would have the CV16 Roll down Tiananmen Square.
