SMIC To Start 14nm Mass Production in H1 2019

Reports have emerged this week that SMIC, the largest foundry in China, is set to start mass production using its in-house developed 14 nm FinFET manufacturing technology in the first half of this year. Notably, this comes at least a couple of quarters earlier than was initially expected, indicating that SMIC is apparently ahead of schedule. Meanwhile the company is already working on its post-14nm processes, as development of its 10 nm and EUV-enabled 7 nm fabrication processes are currently underway.
Based on various reports from China and Taiwan technical media, SMIC’s yields at 14 nm have reached 95%, which is more than sufficient to start mass production. Consequently, the foundry is gearing up for volume production of a 14 nm smartphone SoC in the first half of 2019. While SMIC naturally does not disclose name of their first 14nm customer, the company’s key clients are HiSilicon, Qualcomm, and Fingerprint Cards (FPC, which produces fingerprint sensors), so it's a relatively short list of potential candidates.
Analysts say that SMIC’s 14 nm capacity will be relatively small when compared to the industry leaders, all of whom run multiple leading-edge fabs. SMIC currently has two fabs that can process 300 mm wafers using 28 nm and larger fabrication processes. The same fabs will be used for 14 nm projects too, but given their capacities and SMIC’s very high fab utilization rate (94.1% in Q2 2018), do not expect them to make loads of 14 nm SoCs. And for these reasons, along with prepping 14nm for its current fabs, the company is building a large $10 billion fab that will be used for its leading-edge manufacturing technologies in the future.
“SMIC is getting $10 billion to build capacity for 14nm, 10nm and 7nm. They will have capacity for 70,000 wafers a month by Q4 in 2021,” said Handel Jones, chief executive of International Business Strategies (IBS). “The building is huge. They have bought some equipment, but nothing significant yet.”
That said, do not expect SMIC to produce SoCs using leading-edge FinFET process technologies in quantities that are comparable to other makers of semiconductors in the foreseeable future. Even if the company can line up the capacity, lining up the demand could prove trickier. 14 nm chips are expensive to design and build the masks for, which is why so much chip volume is still at 28 nm and larger

SMIC's latest progress slots in well with China's ambitious “Made in China 2025” plan. Under the plan, government planners want to achieve a 70% chip self-sufficiency by 2025, which having a leading-edge fab will help with. However there's doubt among analysts doubt that it is possible. Most of the ICs produced in China by 2025 will be made by companies based outside of the country.
Past 14nm, SMIC is already at work on its 10nm and 7nm processes as well, as previously confirmed by the company in 2018. Both processes are extremely costly to design, but since the semiconductor industry is growing in general and because of generous funding from the Chinese government (and various affiliated parties), SMIC has enough money for the necessary R&D. Working towards that goal, last year SMIC acquired an EUV step-and-scan system from ASML for $120 million, which is expected to be delivered early in 2019 for use in 7 nm process development and eventually mass production.

China's information consumption saw a rapid increase last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Total business volume of the telecommunication sector rose by 137.9 percent from the previous year, the MIIT has said.

Services of 4G continued to develop last year, with the number of users reaching 1.17 billion.

The average household usage of mobile traffic reached 6.25GB per month in December 2018, more than double the amount in the same period in the previous year, the ministry said.

The ministry attributed the soaring information consumption to Chinese telecommunications operators' measures of increasing Internet connection speed and cutting connection costs.

Wen Ku, director of the telecom department at the MIIT, said the ministry would make continued efforts to expand Internet coverage, improve service quality and release the potential of the digital economy.

Chinese scientists have developed a large-scale transparent smart window that can change light intensity while effectively capturing the particulate matter in smog, said a study published on Saturday in the journal iScience.

The study described a simple solution-based process to fabricate large-area flexible transparent windows with Ag-nylon electrodes for high-efficiency PM2.5 capture.

It takes only 20 minutes to fabricate 7.5 square meters of Ag-nylon flexible transparent windows showing an optical transmittance of over 86 percent, according to the group of scientists led by Yu Shuhong from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC).

The Ag-nylon mesh can not only change the indoor light intensity, but also purify indoor air as a high-efficiency PM2.5 filter.

The scientists found that the obtained Ag-nylon electrodes could be used as an ideal intelligent thermochromic smart window with excellent mechanical stability.

It remains stable after undergoing a bending test with 10,000 bending cycles with a minimum bending radius of 2.0 millimeters.

Also, the Ag-nylon electrodes can remove PM2.5 by 99.65 percent while remaining stable even after 100 cycles of PM filtration and a cleaning process, according to the study.

The design could lay the foundation for next-generation flexible transparent smart windows that can reduce air pollution.

Probably during autumn when one would prefer more sunlight to come through the window.

During summertime, the particulate on the window surface would help prevent too much sunshine from coming in and thus keeping the heat out.

Of course, the fuss of having to change the window screen is another matter. Not to say it's impractical. The window screen can be made to be easily changeable.

China starts to build world's first space-based solar power plant
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

With scientists revealing plans to build the first solar power station in space, China is taking its renewable energy push to new heights, said the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to China's Science and Technology Daily, construction of the first experimental space power plant began in Chongqing, southwest China, weeks ago.

Li Ming, senior vice president of the China Academy of Space Technology, said China is expected to become the first country to build such a plant with practical value.

What does a space-based solar power plant look like?

Using solar power to generate electricity is not a new thing; the energy generation method got its reputation among people because of its clean and green merits.

Even in space, we have seen its presence which is being applied on some artificial earth satellites, manned spacecraft, and space probes. The "space celebrity' Chang'e-4 lunar probe is also equipped with solar panels to keep working during the lunar night.

But what scientists want now is to build a solar power plant, a station that can offer a steady flow of electricity benefiting hundreds of millions of families on earth when available.

The plant will orbit the earth at 36,000 kilometers, tapping the energy of the sun's rays without interference from the atmosphere, or seasonal and night-time loss of sunlight, experts explained.

Pang Zhihao, a researcher at China Academy of Space Technology Corporation, told the media that a solar power station in space holds the promise of providing "an inexhaustible source of clean energy for humans."

What challenges lie ahead

So far, China, the U.S. and Japan have proposed projects to develop their solar power stations but all relevant experiments stand at a basic level.

Bao Weimin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, outlined three questions that needed to answered before further progress.

How to send the mammoth electricity generator to the geosynchronous orbit via the carrier rocket, and then complete automatic assembly?

• How to transmit power from space to the underground?

• How to maintain a safe operation and a clean space environment?

China's answers to these challenges include 3D-printing technology, as well as wireless power transmission. By printing the materials robots can take over the assembling task, which allows scientists to skip the procedure of launching the 100-tone structure into space.

Facing tough challenges ahead, the officials announced future plans to make continuous breakthroughs, from launching small-to-medium-sized solar power stations into the stratosphere to generate electricity between 2021 and 2025 to a megawatt-level space solar power station in 2030.

Scientists in other countries are also working on similar projects to push the huge revolution in the energy sector worldwide.

China Mobile Shanghai and tech giant Huawei jointly announced on Monday that they will start the construction of 5G network in Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, one of the country's major railway terminals.

This cooperation is the global debut of Huawei's 5G digital indoor system (DIS), making the station the world's first to build upon a 5G system.

It is expected to realize a deep indoor 5G coverage inside the station by the end of 2019 when travelers will be able to enjoy various 5G network-based services like AR/VR games, 4K HD movies or ultra-HD video calls with their families.

If people want to watch a movie online, they can use the super fast 5G WiFi which allows people to download a two-gigabyte high-definition movie in less than 20 seconds.

This can happen on each smartphone in the crowded station. The number of passengers can reach 300,000 in a day. The high density of people often caused data congestion, making it slow even to load a video online in the 4G era.

Huawei's cutting-edge 5G base station is just a small box. Its peak Internet speed can reach a staggering 1.2 gigabyte per second.

The faster Internet speed makes positioning much more accurate, boosting indoor navigation services.

By September, Hongqiao Railway Station will be fully covered with 5G system. Huawei says the devices tried today are just a tip of the iceberg.

"Hongqiao Railway Station is leading the 5G commercial deployment in Shanghai," said Zhang Jianming, vice chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

"The 5G digital indoor system will deliver a new travel experience. Passengers will feel that they are getting more out of their journey, and will enjoy it more in this new age. The railway station will show how 5G applications can improve users' experience and offer real benefits to the public. It will help to speed up digital transformation for all sectors across the digital economy," Zhang added.

By using innovative technology, the cooperation will further promote the concept of turning standard railway stations into intelligent ones, just as Peter Zhou, chief marketing officer for Huawei Wireless Network Product Line, said: "The railway stations of the future may be more intelligent than we can possibly imagine."

"While 4G changes our life, 5G will change the society, which means using 5G technology to connect with everything, such as robotics, cars, and so on. It will make the world fully digitalized and intelligent," Zhou added.

5G era

More demo products that apply 5G technology could be expected in 2019 and after 2023, one-third of the 4G users may switch to 5G, said Wang Jianhui, general manager of Capital Securities.

S. Korea became the first Asian country to launch a commercial 5G network with three major carriers in December. LG Uplus, one of them, used Huawei's equipment for 5G deployment.

In the era of 5G, no one will dominate the whole industry, Wang said, noting there will be more collaboration than before.

“From 2G to 4G, no one dominated the standards and the technology. There is Qualcomm in the U.S. and there are Ericsson and Nokia in Europe,” he said.
