ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

Didn't see this posted anywhere yet, and this seemed the most appropriate place for it.

Turkish AH1W super cobra brought down by Kurdish fighters in the Turkish-Iraqi boarder regions.

The shoot down was reported to have occurred on the 13th of May, yet a week later, not a peep in the mainstream western news outlets.
I saw the news a few days ago in IIRC The Washington Post(?) and remember hearing the shooter counting (?). I thought at any rate I heard him say numbers similar to some I know from several Indo-European languages.

delft the article you posted might be a fantasy (as you can see, I'm not saying it is, or it is not, I'm saying it might be): it refers to yesterday's events, but I can't see anything confirming it yet, not even indirectly,

I didn't see it elsewhere. That's why I asked you.
I suppose a lot is happening everywhere but on a small scale. I suppose matters recently went badly for the Syrians in the Aleppo area because forces were concentrated near Damascus for the big push while the East Homs fighting was meant to suck IS forces away from there. Of course maskirovka is a favourite occupation of the Russian military which they no doubt taught the Syrians.

A little disturbing image here. The victims could be ISIS or Syrian Rebels no one knows for sure, but of course Al Jazera media had always hated the current Syrian government and army. So take this news with a grain of salt.

Syrian commander Issam Zahreddine leads army operations in the Deir Az Zor province [Screenshot]

Syrian social media users have circulated photos online of a well-known government army commander posing next to dead bodies in the eastern Syria's Deir Az Zor province.

Tasked with leading the Syrian government's military operations in Deir Az Zor, Issam Zahreddine was reportedly photographed with two hanged bodies behind, both of which ostensibly bear the marks of torture.

Syria war: Fighting continues in Homs, Aleppo

The identity of the two killed people remains unknown, sources told Al Jazeera. They both appeared to have been cut into several pieces before being hanged.

Zahreddin's son and other soldiers reportedly appear in similar pictures that have circulated on social media in recent days.

Diala Chehade, an international criminal law expert, said that she doubts international legal action will be taken against the commander due to Russia's deep involvement in the Syrian conflict.

"The Russian participation... in the armed conflict in Syria will make it very difficult for a veto not to object to a referral to the ICC unless a legitimate government of Syria will accept the jurisdiction of the ICC in the future," she told Al Jazeera from Beirut.

The Syrian conflict started in March 2011 as a largely unarmed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, but it quickly evolved into a full-on civil war between government forces and rebel groups.

United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura recently estimated that 400,000 people have been killed throughout the five years of violence.

A little disturbing image here. ...
while searching for news, I've repeatedly seen (well, for a split of second, before realizing what hellish view it is) pictures of mutilated corpses in Syria this year, which is something medieval (in Prague dismembering the corpse of an executed person hasn't been done since

I've read between 20 and 25 thousand Kurds started their push toward Raqqa (I'll take a look at that area in a separate post, right after I'm done here), which (if true!) would dramatically change the situation, and if you asked me how? I would tell you I'm not going to post any conjecture ("strategic analysis" hahaha), but it would be large scale change(s)

I've read around

things don't go well for the Government (backed up by Russians there), which kinda has been acknowledged officially by the Russian Ministry of Defense:

so Russian main-stream media will become involved in "maskirovka" (of a different type you probably meant, though :)

Which makes sense. With the experience and prestige gained in Syria Hezbollah will be better able to discourage foreign intervention in Lebanon. I recently saw an article about Saudi plans to support violence in Lebanon against Hezbollah.
Hezbollah will also find it easy to win recruits for its forces because of that prestige and because of the economic situation in Lebanon.
delft I'm really unsure about the Hezbollah "prestige" you mentioned twice; wiki says

Hezbollah is called a terrorist organization because it drove the Israeli occupation forces out of Lebanon. Remember the massacres in the Palestinian camps Sabra and Shatila 1982? (
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
) It destroyed the Israeli sponsored "South Lebanese Army" of the Christian major Haddad. It also defeated the Israeli assault on Lebanon in 2006 and has since deterred further large Israeli assaults . Besides it is responsible for providing health and social services to a large and poor part of the Lebanese population. In elections in Lebanon it does very well and it is an important part of the Lebanese government. Many people within and outside Lebanon admire Hezbollah but to the parties you mention it's the Enemy.
