ouch, this is the moment we've all been expecting. Big price cut by Tesla down to Seal/Han level for Model 3 and to Tang level for Model Y. Frankly, they've wait too long. Now that Seal has gained traction, it will dominate that 200 to 300k sedan segment with Han.

This would enrage Tesla owners who bought early and only add to their reputation problems.
Interesting,I thought helped with the better build quality of their cars manufactured in China, Tesla had gotten over the reputation problems found in the USA assembled ones.

Look at how stylish mainstream Hyundai and KIA models have become. Not to mention home runs like Genesis. While styling is easy to brush up or catch up on, powertrain isn't. The amount of capital invested in the R&D side of Japanese auto industry is roughly going to be equal to China's now but the innovation of Japanese products are currently below the Germans, Chinese, and Korean counterparts. The 1990s was the height of Japanese auto industry in terms of products. Their economic height I conjecture to be the 2010s.

While we can chalk up the majority of car infotainment, connectivity, and EV powertrain innovation to Chinese automakers and supply chains, Japanese ones currently only have the mechanical gearbox for EV (Toyota), hydrogen fuel cell... and that's it. Germans and Italians have performance and dynamics. Styling wise Koreans, Chinese, and Germans are leagues ahead of Japanese automakers but this is a field that's relatively easy to adjust.
Why is there a need for an entertainment system? I rather pay dollars less and not have one. As a passenger on a roadtrip, I would rather look at the landscape as we cruise by than continually staring at boring video games.

Many Chinese buyers perceived Tesla as a premium brand. Lowering the price would destroy that image. More importantly, many Chinese buyers have the tendency to invest too much their emotion into their auto purchases that lowering the price would lower the resale value of such cars which some buyers would feel that they are being cheated.

the current Tesla dilemma in China

not great. And for prospective buyers, do you want to wait for further price drops? I saw a group of people singing Chinese national anthem in front of Tesla store because they are outraged that price dropped so much after they bought it. No longer feels premium to own a Tesla. What's next?
