054/A FFG Thread II

Didn't they just cancelled the orders for the remainder 8x 054As in exchange for the first 12x 054Bs earlier this year?

Besides, the 054B is expected to be better than the 054A in practically every metric and was meant to be the direct successor to the 054A. To put it simply, the evolution from 054A to 054B is not the same as 052D to 055.

So why would they expand 054A's production once 054B's production is already well underway?

when did this happen and where is the source for this

the 8 x Type 054A are cancelled in favour of Type 054B?

so the restart of the Type 054A will have how many units

Here, quoted from the 054B/next-generation frigate thread.

It seems additional 054As have been cancelled and Navy plans to order 12 054Bs instead. 8 in Huangpu, 4 in Hudong.

Out of the remaining 20 orders for 054A, the last 8 of them have been cancelled in favor of allocating their slots to the first 12x 054Bs.

I see so the Total Type 054A production is 40 units including 529 and 530?

a) We don't know the exact specs of type 054B yet.

b) Because there are still 2 units of obsolete 28/29 years old type 053H1G and 8 units of 18 to 23 years old type 053H3 that need to be retired and replaced in around 7 to 12 years time. Also, there is no problem in funding for more new frigates, to have more frigates than existing numbers.

Type 054A are being upgraded with each batch production. And also, they have been doing minor upgrades on existing type 054A from time to time, mainly on electronic gears.

lastly there is a need to increase the number of new frigates in lieu of the large number of type 056 transferred to China Coast Guard.

15 years ago today, the lead ship of type 054A was commissioned. PLANS Zhoushan #529 is the first of batch one ships and has been under going major mid-life upgrade since 2020.

4 frigates were constructed under batch one specs, they can be easily recognised by their distinctive bows. All of them were commissioned in 2008.

Chinese Wikipedia has been edited to list new 054A's 523 and 551 as in service. Does anyone have further information to corroborate this?
