The shareholders only care about $$$ and keeping the company profitable in the China market.
Unfortunately it's not because they actually believe China is innocent and that the human rights allegations are false.

China gains (in terms of business) at the end of the day but the lies will continue to linger..
I actually think it's both about $$$ and not believing the lies from the govts in the West. Not all Westerners are clueless and a sizable of them do question the propagandas.

The fact that the shareholders rejected the proposal means they have weighted up the potential reputation damage vs profits. They likely have sensed that the public is either getting numb of the constant anti China bashing or starting to question the narrative, or a bit of both, which means the potential reputation damage is not great anymore.

Europe would be the biggest loser after it loses access to Russian cheap oil and gas. De-industrialization would be in full swing as energy intensive industries would be crippled. On the other hand, NA especially the US would be the biggest benefactor.

To be honest, I never expected that.

For the Americans to take advantage of Australia for example, after going to bat for the Americans, the people under there find out what the Chinese stopped buying from them were being purchased from Uncle Samuel, it is only Australia. They can live it down.

But to de-industrialize large swaths of Europe, that is entirely different.

In the former case, the cannibalized victim makes less money. In the latter case, the cannibalized victim will lose its livelihood and may not recover for generations, if at all.

Yet, the same victims, still are able to sing the praises for America on some days.

What should China do?

It is very unlikely China would be able to do something this harmful and damaging.

Pretend anger is probably enough.

And get the popcorn or other snacks, the most important part.

:D

Why do these people keep on making these stupid assumptions. Xi Jing Ping is not the only one running the show, it’s the entire politburo, one that quite frankly when compared to many other nations (even on such as Russia) is far more able to work together to get proper results. Look at the USA and how almost every single city has not only tent cities with in big infrastructure that is rapidly falling apart. And they are supposed to have the more dynamic and robust of all the systems of governance in the world although to be quite frankly honest, this has to be taken not just with a pitch of salt nor a bag of salt back a complete sack of salt

The shareholders' main goal is to make tons of $$$. Everything else is secondary. If they agree to this proposal, it will screw up their bottom line. Not only that, the Chinese govt and consumers will likely retaliate against the company. The monetary benefits of rejecting the proposal outweigh agreeing to it. That's why they did it.

As for whether they actually believe the allegations, it's hard to say. Unless you know them personally. They're not going to publicly support or denounce these lies because they don't gain anything from it. If they say they believe it, China will retaliate. If they say don't believe, the western govts and public will bash them for being pro-China shills. It's a lose-lose outcome to take a public stance so they won't say anything out loud.

Lastly, the western media coverage has largely shifted to other topics like the war in Ukraine, inflation, EU energy crisis, global recession, British Queen's passing. So the company shareholders is probably betting this story will fly under the radar and I think their assumptions are correct..
