The issue is not the overall size but length of the wings when folded.

The F/A-18E has a folded wing span of 9.32 meters while the Mig29k having a folded wingspan of 7.5 meters the F/A-18E is not only larger in wingspan but also unable to fit on the INS Vikramaditya’s aircraft lift which only allows clearance for around 8.6 meters.

The F/A-18E is able to fit on the INS Vikrant’s lift but just barely with a clearance of 11.20 meter for the wingspan.

It’s likely the INS Vikramaditya will be either retired or will replace its aging fleet of Mig29Ks with domestically produced aircraft while the INS Vikrant operates heavier fighters such as the F/A-18E.

Or they’ll just cut a huge hole in the deck and call it a day.

I think people are underestimating Indian creativity when it comes to fitting into tight spaces.

If they can fit 27 people into a rickshaw, they can probably fit multiple jets into their small carrier lifts.

That's nowhere close to full capacity

India will fit more jets on their carriers by stacking them on top of one another. Jai Hind!

Indians will likely never develop a carrier based aircraft in our lifetimes. They talk big but failed spectacularly with the LCA. A carrier based aircraft is much more difficult.

Most likely they'll drag out negotiations for the F/A-18/Rafale for years and continue operating the migs until the carriers retire.

One landing means nothing. Maybe the second time they tried it the plane was pulled apart by the arrestor hook. We don't know if it took off as well as landed on the carrier.

It was also in clean configuration, missiles are expensive and you can't just dump ordnance in the sea nowadays each time you land like in WW2.

We know the Indians have rejected it for performance reasons. Given Indian history for inducting domestic projects for vanity that's really saying something.

the picture you post is not of MIG-29K. MIG-29K has larger wing area and capacities.
RD-33MK has that emergency power and higher TWR for naval fighter that enable it to have 5 wet stations. buddy refueling.
I doubt 15ton F-18E can replicate it on these small carriers.. Naval fighters are heavy they need fuel tanks or AAR. Those IN MIG29Ks are not same quality as MIG-29KR as there is decade difference in construction.
