Any good Chinese language series or movies to watch? I am trying to learn the language.
Not really for learning the language, but I repeat-watch Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flowers, Shadow, Cliff Walkers etc.) whenever I have time to burn. Even Great Wall has somewhat grown on me.

But yeah, probably not a good way to learn Chinese from historical films since they speak in old speech.

Personally I find it hard to get into contemporary Chinese films and TV series. There's just too many of them and the quality has been all over the place esp. since this past decade as steaming in China really took off. Most of them are just too pop culture-y for my taste, bar a very few exceptions like the Stephen Chow flicks, Wandering Earth, Youth... or anything from Feng Xiaogang really.

Chen Kaige is another favourite director of mine who ofc directed the Lake Changjin films, but I enjoyed his other films more, like A Monk Comes Down A Mountain, and Kukai.

Excuse, do you mean the great wall movie where they basically white whoreship the whole time with the lead actor?

Verily. Exactly that very one. Indeed.

Weirdly enough I liked it not for how good, or bad, it was. I thought there was so much wasted potential and possibilities in it that could actually make the film work as it stood, even with Mat Damon as the protagonist and that ridiculous plot.

There are some department heads in China that needs to get sent to "re-education" camp
TBF it was pretty clear from the get-go the production intended to market that film abroad as much as domestically if not even more so, the fact it ended up tanking notwithstanding. It certainly didn't seem to affect Zhang Yimou's career despite it.

It was basically the reverse of Hollywood's China-pandering, and a lesson well-learned from the looks of it, considering we haven't seen anything of that ilk coming out of China ever since, whereas Hollywood continues to keep at it.

That said, it's already starting to show they're beginning to wise up to the fact each new foray is performing worse than the ones before, sometimes not even let into the market at all, as the Chinese audience aren't having it anymore.

So I'm really interested to see how the new Avatar will fare at the Chinese B.O. this Dec.
