Why is the Y-9 so slow? Is the 550kmh cruise speed on wiki accurate? That's 100kmh slower than C-130J and over 200kmh slower than A-400M.

C-130H have a cruise speed of 540km/h... but super Hercule C-130J is longer and faster. COmparing to A-400m is comparing apples to oranges.

Is it because A400M size transport is a weird in-between size that doesn't really make sense for China?
i.e. What situation demands only 70% of a Y-20, but much more than a Y-8/9?

The cost of development, the tools, spares, logistic and training needed to have something having 70% capacity and doing the same job of Y-20 sound a lot like a waste of ressources, time and money.
