You are right in saying that "profit means nothing in front of physical power and one can't get what one want with only economic incentives", but that is NOT what China is going to do in this case, nor the reason @KYli called it suicidal .

The reason that HSBC can not defy China is because of China's raw force behind the freeze. The account freeze is by court order of HK. If HSBC defy the order, Hongkong (China) can confiscate HSBC' asset in HK for defying court order and Chinese law. It can escalate all the way up to imprison every manager of HSBC in Hongkong and mainland.

It is not only the US who can do things with raw force in the world, so can China and Russia is doing it right now.
