80% of HSBC profit comes from Hong Kong. Asking HSBC to defy the Chinese government is like asking it to commit suicide.

Profit means nothing in front of physical power. The US can catch him and lock him up in jail. I hope people stop thinking economy or money is a deciding factor in the hegemony war. We have been seeing cases of biting feeding hand over and over including woke companies bashing their own customers, Australia antagonizing China and now all the Western sanctions on Russia. That's because profit isn't the most important thing. Just because someone is economically dependent on you, doesn't mean they aren't going to or they can't defy you. You can't always get what you want with only economic incentives and economic measures.

The difference is HSBC's existence depends on China and Hong Kong. If HSBC bites the hand that feeds it, then just take away its banking license in Hong Kong. HSBC could be lucky that it would remain a viable entity. Not saying HSBC wouldn't bow to the US pressure, but China and Hong Kong can make HSBC complied with its policies and laws. HSBC doesn't have a choice in this matter.
