Look this is severely pissing me off.

Xi Jinping issued a directive to produce more sci fi dramas and movies two years ago but it's not bearing fruit.

Why are we letting the Koreans produce a massive string of world topping science fiction TV shows?

Why are Japanese and Chinese incapable of producing live action sci fi? (Excl Godzilla)

Oh but is it just me but does Bae Doona look like Rinko Kikuchi? Plus they have the same haircut

If you don't like Korean shows, just don't watch them. No need to get worked up over it.

Also, China's Chasing Light Production is building a cinematic universe based on Chinese mythology. So far, they have White Snake, Nezha Reborn, and White Snake 2, and they're all top notch animations that are pushing the limits of convention. These are definitely not cartoons for kids.

Just because good Chinese cinema aren't making a splash in the Anglosphere doesn't mean they don't exist.

Now the thing you have to remember is that China is a huge movie market. Korea is an insignificant market next to China. This means that if Korean filmmakers want to make money, they need to target it toward either the Chinese market or the Western market. Indeed, we have seen them do both, and you might notice that successful Korean films contain very little Korean culture.

In contrast, since China is a huge market, Chinese filmmakers are much more motivated to make their movies appeal to the Chinese audience. As such, those movies are not so easily digested by non-Confucian cultures.

The best example of this is Crouching Tiger vs Hero. The former is a tale of revenge and forbidden love, both classic Shakespearean themes. The latter, on the other hand, is a cautionary tale of individual heroism vs the greater good. That is something Western audiences have a very difficult time accepting.

Cyberpunk is an American genre, CDPR is just recycling the genre.

Chinese don't particularly like American sci-fi. Neither Star Wars nor Star Trek have much of a following in China.
Why? I Like Chinese Sci Fi in "The Wandering Earth' mold. but don't care much for films that contain mystic characters with mind blowing powers or fight scenes that contain exaggerated fight scenes, although I enjoyed IP Man because I didn't think it was over the top.

Long story, I'd be happy to continue the discussion in the sci-fi thread if interested.

On the oversea Chinese discussion, my opinion is that if China hopes to win over support of oveseas chinese to its sphere of influence, China must do something to support them whenever a crisis happens to those. I don't know what form of support they should offer because it crosses international boundaries. It is better than do nothing. They could raise an issue with government concerned or offer humantarian support or raise hell in UN. Make their voice heard loud and clear. What I feel is China doesn't have enough support of its overseas chinese due to West propaganda. Even my family prefer to buy Japanese or American products for their perceived goodness. Of course I am exception. Propaganda and projection of power is what China lacks now, perhaps due lack of confidence.

Every foreign visitor to China must have a valid Visa. Being ethnic Chinese, or even born in China, does not exempt one from it. Appreciating the oversea Chinese does not mean to put them above the laws.

Do you know why this guy couldn't get his Visa renewed?

Most likely because of COVID, it is almost impossible for foreigners to get a visa with convenient terms.

Early last year, the government cancelled all active business and tourist visas, meaning that unless you were already in the country, you can't enter. If you were in China at the time of the suspension, you could stay until the end of your current term of validity, e.g. if your visa is 5-year multiple-entry, maximum 90 days per entry, then you can stay to the end of your 90 days (plus a special 60-day extension because of COVID).

Currently, the only foreigners who can enter are those with residency, or can apply for a visa if they have family in China. If you're a foreigner and you need a visa for business, well, it's very difficult to get one unless you're working for a SOE or performing some critical function in a key industry. Some foreigners are still here for small business but only because they never went home, and they kept renewing their visas while remaining inside China.

After the debacle that was Peng Shuai, I've been thinking. Instead of creating more domestic propaganda that is just more anti-Japanese and Korean War movies and dramas, China should also consider more external propaganda films. And I'm not talking about The Great Wall Matt Damon fiasco.

China should create exciting blockbusters that showed the amazing things China did in the past. For example a blockbuster on Zheng He's swashbuckling adventures. Or how Uighurs sought refuge in Xinjiang hundreds of years ago. An epic style film. Or how China housed Jews escaping Nazi Germany in WWII. A historical war drama film. Something like Schindler's List.

Or how China came to the defense of Korea against Japanese invasions 800 years ago. Or just create some North Korean intrigue spy film.

So much exciting source material to work with. Stop making more cookie cutter warfighting movies.

Lol. Or more In the Mood for Love steamy films.
