Guys, please consider the economics from the UK point of view.
The UK is unable to build any more Astute submarines because it’s production lines are being taken up with the 4 new deterrent subs. It is still building the last of the Astute's and has a hot production line and we have recently been bidding to set up production lines abroad for frigates.
The previous submarine deal was nearly $100B for France. The UK is a selling nation, we would love to sell Astutes to Australia, especially at the expense of France, this is a killer economic deal for UK PLC.
I am just saying there is more than one angle to look at, this is a $100B we are talking about.

It takes time to get the crew up to speed on how to operate them, for one, not to mention the financial drain associated with a toy of this caliber.
If France is getting the boot here then maybe the next US frigate will be the Type 26 to match the UK, CAN, and AUS. That would be another great economic win for the UK and fits with the UK ship building strategy.
The UK can (must?) take part in this and have a positive China policy.

It is a multi decade confrontation so time is not an issue. See the overall strategy, same thing happening with SK and JP: Nukes AND alliance is how you bridge the China problem.
Maybe China should offer to buy the French subs instead!
