Huawei made the mistake of not building a semiconductor supply chain years ago.

Now it is trying to reverse that mistake.

Not expecting the political risk and counting on suppliers from adversarial countries is unwise and naive. Investing now is a positive thing but still it is disappointing that Huawei wouldn't have been doing what it has been doing without the US sanctions.
Before the establishment of Hubble Investment in 2019, Huawei had always followed the long-term principle of not investing in any company. Hubble’s mission is closely linked to the production of Huawei chips via wholly-owned subsidiary HiSilicon. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei had insisted the company would not invest in or partner with suppliers in order to ensure it was free to choose the best technologies.

@bettydice bro as a parent, that is what a good spanking will do for you, At that time the Chinese enterprises believed in FREE TRADE cause joining WTO everybody believes in the letter of the law, now international law is shit and the American is destroying the institutional foundation which they themselves build.

It is also easy to criticize in hindsight.

@jfcarli bro the American established those international institution and law to benefit them now they're undermining it, their forefathers will be surely turning in their graves and curse the present generation for losing those inheritance...LOL
I actually referred exclusively to Huawei. Maybe they were naive (don't think so). They were unbelievably successful and made an incredible amount of money. They can now count on that treasure to catapult themselves to even greater successes.

I think it is just a pit stop. No one can say Huawei is stupid. Also, they have an incredible managerial know how which managed to give them support to become so powerful and so fast.

If they share their managerial and technical know how with all those firms/startups it won't be long those companies will become world class in their own right.

As I said before, it is easy to criticize in hindsight, but I think Ren Zhengfei did the right thing. Concentrating on what he thought was important he created an incredible colossus.

Huawei was and is a great asset for China. They will teach many of those small companies they are investing now.

@jfcarli bro I share your opinion but from a business perspective you need to have a great product to succeed and sourcing from the best material available MARKETING WISE is the way to go, you need customers and they had been able to satisfy their curiosity and needs. Now Huawei is a household name with the help of Trump they're able to do IDM with knowledge gain from those endeavors. Pass is pass what important is what you plan to do afterward and I'm encourage that Huawei is fighting back, wanted to prove that they are here to stay and give the Middle Fxxxxr to Uncle Sam.

@Overbom bro sorry I don't get it, is this another new FAB under construction or the latest existing one (SHANGHAI FAB) with the 14nm FAB line under production? I think BNN is behind the curve in its story in regards to Chinese FAB and IC industry in particular. Maybe what its stating is the SMIC Beijing FAB under construction that will produced the 28nm domestic line instead of that of Shanghai FAB.

It looks like a new fab to me.

If China is serious about ending semiconductor import dependency, my guestimate was a minimum requirement of 187 new fabs (200mm+300mm)

So I reckon SMIC could aim for more than 2 new fabs every year
