That guy who mentioned the lack of an "independent press" is myself. And I don't think there was a sense of pride in that statement. China simply doesn't go about boasting it has a "free" press.

How exactly is India's press not free? There are plenty of sources like the Hindu that relentlessly attack the Government, and analysts like Ajai Shukla and Pravin Sawhney who have even lied or bent the truth to make Modi look bad.

Wrong. It isn't the ONLY source of info.
But it has to be admitted that the forum discussion has went too much concentrating around the Indian press.

It's helpless actually since they are screeching about it endlessly while the Chinese Wraps things up quickly and to the point - releasing media materials that Indians can't match in worth.

In 2016, India’s rank was 133 which has steadily climbed down to 142 in 2020. The RSF report says India is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists trying to do their job properly. They are exposed to every kind of attack, including police violence against reporters, ambushes by political activists, and reprisals instigated by criminal groups or corrupt local officials.

You maybe able to fool Non-Indians here but not those who live there. Indian Press being Free is a big fat joke.

Oh you talk about Hindu being Anti-Govt?
This is the Chairperson of Hindu group so happy and enjoying the moment with Modi. Yea im sure she's Anti Modi (and ive been reading Hindu for the last 6 years). The articles there are barely Anti Govt. The issue is that Bhakts like you label any News as Anti Modi if it doesn't involve complete praise for your master.

Now coming to press freedom. Dainik Bhaskar the biggest newspaper in India was raided immediately after they criticized Modis COVID handling. Now DB has notched down its criticism of Modi as a result.
NDTV tried to be Anti Govt but then was raided by CBI,ED . Infact whosover has actually tried to be Anti Modi has been targeted by Indian Agencies and you call that Press freedom?

Name me more than 10 Media orgs that are Anti Modi. Shouldn't be a problem in such a big country which professes Free Press.
Because i can name countless Media orgs who do Modis bidding 24/7 and enjoy Strong state support -
Aaj Tak, India Today, ANI Republic, Times Now, Network 18, Zee News, Sudharshan, ABP, India TV, News X etc & i can go on and on.

The only Media org which is legitimately Anti Govt is The Wire & even it has limited reach because of being an online news portal.

So NO, Indian Press is not free.

Spruts have been modified by the Russians. It has decent thermals and optics now. Indians get your orders in quick before they're sold out.

Also let's not forget the journalists jailed and killed in India. No better possibly worse than China. At least with China, they just toe the official lines which though filled with political bias, report the facts. I challenge people to find Chinese official media lying about things. Indian media and government have frequently lied about things in contrast.

So they media and government are different. Sure China's is one party and unified narrative but at least the narrative is based on facts and open for others to challenge when it is incorrect. India's is simply a mess and let's not forget India's 5 million fake news publications and India's IT Cell brigade. China censors internal dialogue and observe them. India tries to shape global narratives but few believe their shit only when they talk nonsense about China do the west bother to say a token yeah yeah that's right. Rest of the time India is ignored.

Oh it should also be added again that India performs the world's most frequent internet blackouts and shutdowns to censor "free" media and peoples. Also to avoid real information getting out to the public. How free of India.

See the self own. I quoted Media conglomerates who are on TV and enjoy 100x the reach these online news portal do. You quoted Online Media orgs who survive on public donations & barely throw in few articles here and there which are critical of the Govt . Media freedom lol.

Also if you think Shekhar Gupta owned Print is Anti Modi then you need a mental checkup.

And No im not a Pakistani. But thats the typical Bhakt way of diverting from the issue.
