The Wing Loong-2H UAV is capable of providing public cellular service to an area of 50km^2, and establishing audiovisual communications network (for emergency services) to an area of 15000km^2.

A SMS is sent to people in the area, informing them the UAV will only loiter for 5 hours, they should use this time window to make essential reports and contact their family.

They flew over 1000 KM from Guizhou to Henan in order to make this happen. We know this since the aircraft hasn’t entered mass production yet. The one used was the one that performed an experiment early this year.

China's largest general-purpose drone makes successful maiden flight

Dorothy Zheng July 20, 2021

China's largest general-purpose drone made a successful maiden flight, CAAC News reported Tuesday.

The Yun-5 general-purpose UAV, developed by Aviation Industry Tongfei, took to the blue sky at 8:02 a.m. on July 20 at Moqi Airport in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and successfully completed its flight plan, the report said.

During the flight, the aircraft had a stable attitude and was in good condition, with all systems and equipment working normally, CAAC News quoted the aircraft crew as saying.

The Yun-5 general-purpose UAV has reliable flight, good low-altitude and low-speed performance, high payload and large cabin space volume, the report said.

It can take off and land short distances on dirt runways, grass runways and airstrips, and has low maintenance costs, making it an ideal large-tonnage multipurpose UAV, the report said.

As China's largest general-purpose UAV in development, the Yun-5 UAV is equipped with an advanced telemetry maneuvering system, information transmission system and ground command and control system.

With a mission payload that includes an intelligent air-drop and air-delivery system and an advanced photoelectric turret, it can undertake a variety of integrated security and emergency rescue missions, including material delivery, express transport and disaster monitoring and rescue.

I've lost track on all the reported maiden flights for the Yun-5 drone now. My takeaway despite some nice imagery including from production is that this effort appears to go nowhere fast so far.

What you mean by nowhere fast? This transport UAV is geared mostly to civilian air transport with possibility of being used in military too. But for now ground transport is more than adequate in most places. But for isolated village in the west or for isolated islet in SCS This UAV is god send. China is continental size country and not all of them are cover by road or rail network. So they have to test to see if it make economical sense to operate transport UAV

If you want to transport to islands or villages isolated by mountains and deserts, transport drones are the way to go.

I mean despite various reports on first flights (dating back to at least 2018) no one appears to actually start adapting them in an operational capacity. Instead we get more curious reports of first flights which are clearly not quite that.

If you want to transport to islands or villages isolated by mountains and deserts, transport drones are the way to go.

I can see various uses for these, yes. My point related to actual adaption by operators, which so far doesnt seem to be happening.

I wonder if they could make the drone safe enough for transporting people. It already has the layout and space suitable for the task.
