What could be read on the hi-res photos: The designation QJY-201 for the GPMG is confirmed. The squad machine gun is QJB-201, thus, it seems that there are two variants, i.e. the QJS-161 for paratroopers and QJB-201 for infantry. My guess is that they differ from each other mainly by length of their barrels (longer one for infantry and shorter one for paras).

I'm really wondering why China still pushes for submachine guns in military usage rather than carbines. Even in some of the recent photos with troops decked out in new xingkong gear some still had smg's with suppressors. I'm wondering if it's just old doctrine that has yet to be updated since I think that type of squad set up is from the Sino-Vietnam war. Police I can understand since lower recoil and less penetration can be ideal especially in a country where firearm and body armor ownership is rare.
I feel like the front site is a bit too high. Wouldn't that obscure the sights attached?
Nah. Based on the picture, the micro red dot is tall enough to have barely any or no sight obstruction by the iron sight.
Its the same as the co-witness on our M4s.
M4 have fixed front sight. So you zero your M68 COO then elevate your front post so that it forms a lollypop, not the doctrinal way, but definitively faster, since the COO is your primary and you have a better sight picture to work with.
This new generation of PLA small arms are really well made! The machining, finishing and the coating is super smooth, the optics too. Simple, elegant, and functional designs! I like them a lot.

That being said, I feel like the new generation of pistols seem a little rough, the machining and the coating is not as smooth...

Can you judge finish from display guns? Maybe they spend some time polishing them for display.
If you look at the pistol's surface, it has some rough uneven spots while the lmg's surface is much much smoother. That indicates that the finish is uneven and a bit rough. Polishing a gun makes them even more noticeable.
