I blame Gao Fu for being a moron. Even though his words have been taken out of context and misrepresented by the Western media. But as China CDC head, Gao Fu should know better for saying what he has said.

I wouldn't change anything for s..t and I wouldn't want Chinese scientists play politics or be saddled with political b.s. like how it was done in the former U.S.S.R. Gao Fu has nothing to apologize for nor does he need to change or calibrate his future statements. As long as he sticks to the facts and science he and the rest of the country will be vindicated by history and results.

What you're advocating for is purely from a temporary P.R. war against the recalcitrant west. The current struggle China is facing with is a long term struggle. If the Chinese keeps calibrating to win some useless P.R. war at the expense of it's overall strategic objectives then it's just a wasteful and unnecessary endeavor. Let the Americans focus on their vacuous self congratulatory statements since their declarations have absolutely nothing to do with reality. Sooner or later reality will catch up to their b.s. and the whole world will witness who's been telling the truth. Actions speaks louder than words it doesn't matter if it's Putonghua.

BEIJING (AP) — Indonesia said Monday that it is satisfied with the effectiveness of the Sinovac coronavirus vaccine it is using, after the acknowledgement by China’s top disease control official that current vaccines offer low protection against the virus.

Siti Nadia Tarmizi, a spokesperson for Indonesia’s COVID-19 vaccine program, said the World Health Organization had found the Chinese vaccines had met requirements by being more than 50% effective. She noted that clinical trials for the Sinovac vaccine in Indonesia showed it was 65% effective.

“It means we are talking about the ability to form antibodies in our bodies is still very good,” she said.

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean authorities on Sunday backed the country’s widespread use of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Chinese firm Sinovac after China’s top disease official appeared to make conflicting statements about its efficacy.

On Sunday, Chilean science minister Andres Couve said it was important to focus on the data and the vaccine’s effectiveness in reducing illness that required medical treatment or being hospitalized or dying, which it achieved in the Brazilian study in 83.7% and 100% of cases respectively.

He said Chile’s health ministry will shortly publish a real world study on the effectiveness of both vaccines rolled out in its population and appealed to Chileans to continue to participate in the vaccination programme.

Heriberto Garcia, director of Chile’s Public Health Institute which greenlighted CoronaVac’s emergency roll-out, said people should not pay attention to headlines.

Meh, if it's not this, there's always going to be something else. As we've seen with Xinjiang, Western media will even make things up if they can't find anything to twist.
senior bureaucrats should be politically aware of the things they say. There is a reason why only certain bureaucrats in the Canadian government are allow to speak to the public

Well you cant say that you want a meritocracy and then impose harsh requirements on PR. So even if they are very smart, sometimes they dont pay too much attention on the PR side.

I mean PR is important, but if China places it above everything else then you might as well choose a politician to do the job..

How's that working out? Is it effective in terms of dealing with the actual virus? Or is political bullshit the name of the game that China must copy from the veritable west as well? Come on dude, I lived in Canada and have friends that are still in Canada. Just look at the cases happening in Ontario and specifically in Toronto it's a joke. I remember quite vividly how at one point the medical expert tasked at the Federal level initially said that wearing a mask wasn't necessary or wasn't an effective tool in preventing from contracting Covid-19. She's still in the job. Wasn't she supposed to know better than spewing stupidity that openly? Is that what you call "politically astute"

Senior bureaucrats' speeches/news releases all need approval from the Minister offices.

At one point before the briefing gets underway, Yaffe remarks “I don’t know why I bring all these papers. I never look at them. I just say whatever they write down for me.”

And your point of bringing this to everyone's attention here is to prove what exactly? That all western Democracies or all Democracies for that matter lies through their teeth and suffer no consequences. Is this what you're pushing for the beaurucrats in China is to micromanage or vet their scientists before making comments in the western media? Like having political commissars.

I agree with your opinion. Better to let scientists and bureaucrats speak freely (on their field) and to suffer some PR gaffes than to replace them with politicians
