Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

I would say the provinces are guiding the covid response precisely because of lack of direction from the federal level.

While normal health care matters are provincial, emergency response is absolutely a federal responsibility. For a highly contagious disease like covid-19, a fragmented, province-based response is doomed from the start.

The provincial governments have limited resources, and more importantly, limited vision. Provinces cannot independently deal with China, for example, to buy vaccines. Vaccine approval is federal. The current school fiasco is another symptom of province-led pandemic response. The Ontario government is now more interested in keeping parents working than keeping the disease from spreading.

Trudeau has been a complete failure.
Because Justin Trudeau is a p..y and one of these virtue signaling useless p.o.s. politician that has infected the Liberal party of his country.

I could just imagine the chaos he would have sowed if he was the P.M. of Canada back when the F.L.Q. separatists/terrorists happened. The country would have probably imploded and Quebec would have successfully separated through capitulation and surrender.

P.M. Pierre Trudeau had the balls to invoke the War Measures Act which called up the military to pacify the terrorists action in Quebec and the whole country which was essentially a quasi martial law. If he was the P.M. in Canada he would have invoked a similar emergency measure to ensure the majority of Canadians are actually protected and safe from the pandemic, and he wouldn't have placated the needs of the country to the U.S. Justin Trudeau may have inherited his father's great name and clout but that's where it all ends. He sucks as a leader and holier than thou m...n.

Trudeau is not some absolute ruler. Health matters are handled mostly at the provincial level, thus it is mostly provincial leadership that guides Covid response.

This is not meant to be a defense of the guy, just FYI for anyone interested.

What I don't understand when it comes to Canada is why testing, tracing, and enforcement is so lax (as mentioned by @Bellum_Romanum). If there is capacity to do 60,000 tests/day in Ontario, then they should focus these tests to lockdown actual places rather than hodgepodge of business types and regions. None of this would be "against freedumm" or anything like that, certainly probably more "free" than randomly shutting down your business every other week.

For more evidence of political disease. Look at all these finger pointing articles, and still no domestic vaccine solution.

<-- This one is a special hoot. What can Chinese "steal" when there is no vaccine in Canada??
Yes they're lying. It's so obvious why the deal was cancelled. The West got together to ignore China's role in a vaccine. You see that in their news reports how slanted they're against Chinese vaccines and how they want to scare everyone from it. If I recall Trudeau was begging Biden to ship Canada vaccines. That's probably the embarrassing part for Canada that they're covering up. Because of their petty politics, more people died.

So do we have enough real world info to judge effective of vaccines yet?

Someone was pointing out Chile and Serbia as proof of Chinese vaccines being ineffective as cases are still rising.
This was in comparison to the US, UK, and Israel where cases have sharply fallen since a peak in January.

However, I don't think this is good analysis. The peak was already falling before vaccinations began. It is possible that vaccines have prevented another peak, but not responsible for the drop itself.

UAE using a combination of both Pfizer and Sinopharm seem happy with the results so far with Sinopharm going as far as building a production facility.

In both US and UK, the new cases began to drop on 10th of January, at the time UK had 3.58% and US had 2.69% population who have received at least one shot. That means a lower percentage received 2nd shot and even further lower had immunity (2 weeks after 2nd shot). This means their vaccination program played absolutely no role in curbing the new cases.

This single point is enough to call whoever making such argument ignorant, idiot or plain propagandists. No further discussion is needed.

Yes the argument that vaccines is causing the drop in cases in those countries is not a scientific one. It is too soon for effects of herd immunity by vaccine to manifest. The more probable reason is lockdowns and masking

What is the percentage of people vaccinated in those countries? Without knowing that it is hard to make an estimate.

Got my 1 dose of Pfizer. Feeling fine. My sister did get a sore arm after vaccinating with Moderna a few days ago.

Don't understand why they would reopen school when there are only 2-3 months left before summer. I think it is just a poliitical decision over science and common sense.
