Chinese shipbuilding industry

What's going on? Shipping charter rates are sky high. If you are a ship owner you are in a very good position, with high shipping demand.

I got some theories.

Around a decade ago, shipbuilding hit a peak and thanks to the glut, global shipbuilding started going down.

We maintained an average of 600 to 1100 ships being scrapped each year. A commercial ship has a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years. However two things maybe causing ships to be scrapped prematurely. The first is tightening 'green' measures throughout the world, especially in the EU and China. Older vessels with smokier engines either has to be refitted with 'scrubbers', but if the refit expense is too high, the ship is sent to the breakers instead. The second is the rising prices of ship scrap. This goes hand in hand with the rising prices of iron ore as steel is being sought after for manufacturing particularly in China where there is a building and manufacturing resurgence after covid. This creates a profit incentive, in sync with the cost of refitting older ships to be more green, to send ships prematurely to the breakers instead. The glut of ships after 2012 is now replaced with a shortage of ships in 2021.

Next are separate topics and news:

These are large bulkers. That's in addition to the four Waigaoquiao bulkers U-Ming ordered to be chartered to Anglo American.

Qatar is currently biggest LNG producer in the world. Various Qatar enterprises are working with Waigaoquiao for LNG carriers using the LNT A-BOX containment system developed by David Wu at Saga LNG and LNT Marine. He is currently based in Shanghai.

Nitpick : they guy is trained as a neurosurgeon, arguably most difficult medical specialty out there yet pivoted to shipping industry? What an experience.

That would be an interesting question to ask him.

He appears to have the resume of an overachiever. Remember his own invention of an LNG containment system is trying to challenge the dominance of the current world standard.

Another LNG carrier is ordered using the LNT A-box design, with another one in negotiation.

Private shipbuilder has currently around 60 ship building contracts, over 30 signed in the past year alone.

More information on the Anglo American orders for Waigaoquiao Shipyards. These are 190,000 DWT, 300 meters in length with a beam of 47.5 meters, so these are not small ships. They will be dual fuel powered including LNG.

Isn't this close by or is the same shipyard the Type 054A is built? The place is littered with government research vessels. This can foreshadow the arrival of IEPS warships from these shipyards. The pertained vessel is not a vessel intended to test electric propulsion but a research vessel for other purposes that happens to have an electric propulsion.

The ship next to the 31st Type 054A is likely to be a research vessel of some sort.

Qatar is out to assemble the world's biggest LNG carrier fleet to support its global LNG king ambitions. The tenders are given to shipowners, and will use Chinese and Korean shipyards for the ships. Up to 100 LNG carriers will be built.

"To meet the anticipated shipping demand, Qatar Petroleum has entered into agreements with Korean and Chinese shipyards to reserve space for the construction of up to 100 newbuild LNG carriers. Upon receiving responses to the tender, Qatar Petroleum says it will assess the bidders’ technical and commercial capabilities with the goal of assigning selected ship owners to the reserved shipyard construction slots."

“As we have previously announced, Qatar Petroleum entered into agreements with major Korean and Chinese shipyards to reserve LNG ship construction capacity for building as many as 100 new LNG carriers to cater for the needs of North Field Expansion Project as well as for Qatar Petroleum’s future LNG carrier fleet requirements, in what will be the largest LNG shipbuilding program in history. The release of this ITT package is a major milestone in our efforts towards securing the most qualified ship owners and operators for our future LNG carrier fleet,” said His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum."

Evergreen plans 20 containerships, built in Chinese, Korean and Japanese shipyards. By the way, one of Evergreen's biggest ships, the 20,000+ TEU Ever Given, has ran into an issue and is now blocking the Suez Canal. Eight tugboats are trying to move the ship.
