Same here bro, from my analysis the Mengshi is meant for the light force or RDF (Rapid deployment force), the PCL-161 is for brigade used , while the PCL-181 is Division asset.

How does something like PLL05 120mm Gun-Mortar fit into this then? Seems like it overlaps with the Mengshi 122mm if this is the case.

I find PLA has so much indirect fire assets, it's kind of crazy.

NATO has 155mm, 105mm guns, 120mm, 82mm, 62mm Mortars.
It's quite clear how they fit together. Not so much with PLA.

Also, @Hendrik_2000, I've read that single PCL-181 can fit into Y-9.

It does not say whether PCL-181 can fit or transported on Y-9 It might not fit the width limit of Y-9 or height limitation It just comparing the transport capacity of Y-9 which is theoretically 25 ton to weight of PCL-181 whichis 25 ton But that is pushing to the limit with no spare. How about ammuniton ? Does it have to be transported separately?

To me, it implies that it can fit one. Another article definitely stated Y-20 can carry 2.
I imagine ammo would be transported separately anyway since it would be more efficient to load that in another plane. You aren't rolling straight off the plane into action.

I looked into it a bit more, yes I see that 105mm in PLA is being phased out. I saw something like SH-2 (I think it was), but now I see it is for export. At one time you had 155, 152, 130, 122, 105, and that was just guns.

I still think PLL05 has some overlap, but nothing like before.

This is something from my own experience. Where I was, there was an idea to transfer mortar duties from infantry units to artillery because of indirect fire experience. However, this was a failure since the artillery units are mobile, and most of the mortar operations are usually dismounted. My takeaway from it was the importance of aligning the capabilities of the equipment properly.

PHL-03 for coastal defense. The rockets were aimed at a moving surface target. It took three or four tries before hitting the moving boat, with the first few detonating in very close proximity. Pretty impressive.

Is this their first try? if so, it sure is impressive. Now that they are sure it can work, the remaining task is to finetune the targeting. Either the engineers finding ways to improve the rocket CEP and/or improved training for the troops responsible for the MLRS.

also, are they using guided/unguided rockets?

Of course they used guided rockets. You can’t hit a moving target with unguided ones.
