In short, The People of America stand with Hong Kong as a convenient tool and pawn, without the burdensome HongKongers.

Why is everyone so surprised by this. Conservative Americans still believe in America first. The three types of immigrants the U.S. need are:
1) Cheap manual labor for agriculture and construction.
2) Sophisticated intellectual labor for engineers, software developers, etc.
3) Rich people who could bring massive cash inflows.
99% of Hong Kong rebels don't qualify for any of the above. What Senator Cruz did is within American interests.

The Taiwanese don't remember that they got tossed out as used toilet paper when the west pivoted to mainland China first to go against the soviets and second to make old rich western dudes $$$$? They have been string along to face anhillation because it serves the strategic interest of the west. The first island chain theory has been widely publicize in us military journals/think-tankies/etc.
Imagine being "free" and spending all this time screaming fight for freedom but not spending anytime to access and learn all the information that is freely available in the free world.
