Trump cares about his image. You think he wants to be known as destroying the US economy? The problem with Trump is he's a white supremacist and he thinks no one not white can do anything without white people. That's what his policies were following until China didn't collapse day one of his trade like he proclaimed would happen. If the US doesn't need China why hasn't slapped tariffs on the rest of China's exports like he threatens. It's a forgotten threat because the rest of China's exports are US companies outsourcing to China their products to be made. US companies get hit and hurt the most there. Meaning also all the tariffs slapped before were mostly actual Chinese companies. His tariffs did nothing to the Chinese economy. He's poking the perimeter right now. If the US doesn't need China, then why doesn't he decouple right now! Wouldn't that send the clearest message of how the US doesn't need anyone?

Look at the US's coronavirus response... Which country is more likely be able to recover from a macro emergency? Pretty hard to keep up the message that your system is superior when they keep failing challenges.
In the end of it, America's xenophobia and exceptionalism is finally coming home to bite, hard

But then every Chinese has to buy Huawei phone since neither Huawei nor its Chinese competitors are willing (rightfully) share a common OS just like the dead effort of Symbian. Is Huawei going to be mercy to Chinese citizens after all other Chinese competitors are killed off? Certainly not, Huawei is a company responsible only to its shareholders/employees, it is not the government who still have a legal duty to consider the living cost of citizens.

Huawei is a great company, not doubt. I am proud of China having one company like Huawei. But we should not see Huawei as a national hero (Ren Zhengfei's own word) or worship it as God.
Huawei is just a national champion, just like Cisco or Intel.in the US.

btw, Huawei was wise enough not to switch smartphone to HarmonyOS last year, rather the first step is to replace GMS with HMS, which has been successful.

As you know this week HarmonyOS will be introduced in all other products except smartphones, so it looks like in 2021 Huawei will then declare independence and switch all its smartphones to Harmony. We shall see if that's the case

Samsung reportedly cutting off chip sales to Huawei

Huawei's response to the global ban of semiconductor shipments has been to buy up as much inventory as possible ahead of sanctions, which are to go into full effect in mid-September. According to Taiwanese research firm DRAMXchange. Huawei's buying spree has driven up the spot price of DRAM or dynamic random-access memory, creating windfall profits for chip suppliers, according to the analysis.

"Since the US sanctions began last year, Huawei has developed its own instruments and meters, and electronic design automation tool software. Nevertheless, we realized that we couldn't even make all the instruments, so we transferred the technology to a Chinese instrument and meter factory, and it has led a group of Chinese companies to replace US firms in the sector," Yu said

what is more simple to copy than a software? :)

About us dominance in software tools to design chips....

This is an old video I found on EUV light source experiments in China.

It shows that at least China has some experience with building EUV light sources. Maybe it's not good enough for a lithography, but at least they are not starting from complete scratch.

Although, I think the design of this light source is very different from ASML EUV which uses a tin dropper. Aka DPP.

But according to this paper, the Free electron laser solution in the video could be a contender for EUV lithography.

@WTAN whats your thoughts on Non-DPP light sources?
Yes.....the Free Electron Laser as a EUV Light Source is a potential candidate for use in next generation EUV Lithography Machines. The FEL has High Power potential (500-1000W) and is also economical to operate. Chinese Scientists should look into this.

The current DPP EUV Light source developed by Harbin Institute produces 150W. This should be sufficient for mass production of Chips.
China is developing LPP and DPP Light Sources.

This article confirms the rumours that as part of the 02 Lithography Machine Special Project, Huawei has developed a EDA Tool for designing 7nm Chips.
