Is Artificial Intelligence Overrated?

Key Reasons For Why It Is Overrated

1) Venture Capitalist business culture focuses on scamming money from gullible investors rather than creating a functioning product.

2) No true artificial intelligence, there are always humans guiding the AI, which undercuts the premise of the field. Won't be true AI for decades.

3) Too much hype in the industry.

4) Simpler hardware and software can get the job done. Many complex frameworks and models are not needed, only sustained by hype and (once again) gullible investors.

This makes intuitive sense to me, since while I am not an AI programmer, I do design apps for people who hate using spreadsheets for some reason. (Their loss, not mine)

In the light of China injecting 1.4 trillion into "high tech fields" such as 5G and AI, lets hope some of that money finds its way into hardware where its needed.
Otherwise, it is just reinflating a tech bubble on the verge of bursting.

As someone who is an AI practitioner and has a background in real cognitive science, that has had a lot of success in the field,"Overrated" is a relative term. It's only really overrated to the amateur outsiders. To the rest of us most of what you put in your opinion is either reacting to marketing BS or not accurate. If you dig in and talk to the practitioners they will tell you don't react to the VCs or the amateurs. 99% of what is called AI is really just fancy algorithms and advanced statistics.

"True AI" is a made up term. Even humans have to be trained to do or recognize things. Now if you are talking about passing the Turing Test. You will never know when an AI achieves that milestone.

"Simpler hardware"? What does that even mean? Are you saying there are things you can do without AI using simple statistics? Sure there are.

"AI" may be a hot buzzword right now. And use that term or not, what "AI" is doing on the commercial side isn't going away or disappearing. Detecting skin cancer, Creating synthetic data, Letting you know someone is hacking your account. etc. These don't disappear.

AI will get closer and closer to the goals espoused in sci-fi and research. And it will continue to evolve, regardless of what a bunch of amateurs and VCs want to call and say about it. But for you and most of the public, you will never know when AI truly gets to a level where it behaves like (or better than) a human. It may be there already.

We need to separate "AI as an Investment" from "AI as a Technology".

Is AI as an investment overrated ? Probably. Is AI as a technology overrated ? Absolutely not.

Remember the "dotcom bubble" of 2000-2002 ? It crashed in a spectacular manner, but did not take the dotcom technology down with it. Now internet technology permeates every part of our daily life.

Completely Agree.

End goal of AI is automation to increase overall productivity.

Investment is up to individual business owners.

Chinese people are very behind on using machines in small businesses. People need to learn to "automate" in the restaurants and stuff.

Why is there a controversy over AI? It's because they watch Terminator too many times.

Everything how Hollywood is portraying AI is overrated for the foreseeable future. Everyone is making it like it's an independent intelligence hence why the Godlike characteristics AI is given. Hence why also the panic the US has for Chinese AI developments. There can be only one God just like there can be only one AI. That's why there's a controversy over who'll win the AI race.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

How come Apple iPhones when it first had facial recognition had problems telling the difference between people of the same race? Apple programmers only bothered writing algorithms for distinctions among Western faces. A racist would use it to say machines have no prejudices so if it can't tell people are apart within races, it's because they're right when they claim all people in those races look alike. It's not them. A non-biased machine can't tell them apart so it's not racist to say so. Then why are they afraid of Chinese AI? Because they know AI will have as much prejudice as the person who programmed it.

Google thought is was bigger than China hence they decided to pick a fight. They wanted to be able to pick what search results people in China saw on the internet. Just like right now I do a search on China and only negatives news from Western news sources show on my page. The algorithms that Google or Yahoo or any other search engine write know I search for news on China therefore every time I turn on my computer in the morning to see what's going on in the world, it's already posting what new negative news about China is going on. If I want to buy something and do a search on the internet, the first result is Amazon. With those algorithms they make sure I get the Western spin and favor on the internet are the beginnings of how AI will work hence why Google thought it was that important and necessary to take on China. There was that controversy how the big search engines were charging for anyone who wanted their results to be the first ones to show up. Just imagine how much money Google would make just by prioritizing what internet users got in search results.

Asian musician Kris Wu caused a stir in the US when his songs beat Ariana Grande on the American charts. Ariana Grande and her manager accused it was bots from Asia. How did it happen? Kris Wu had a new album that was scheduled to be release the same week Ariana Grande's new album was to come out. But because Kris Wu had a birthday coming, his managers decided to change the debut of his album in Asia later to the day of his birthday. They forgot to change the date in the US market. So because Kris Wu fans in Asia faced a delay, they discovered that his album was available in the US and they all scrambled to buy it from US outlets and not in Asia where they normally would purchase it. Ariana Grande's song that was expected to be number one only managed 16th place while all of Kris Wu's songs in his album were ahead of hers.

It's these things what AI is for and will manage. It will managed what news you read. It will make Ariana Grande look like she's the number one selling artist in the world. It will do all of it except make you worship it like a God. China won't be angry that the US will have its own AI but US will be angry because their AI is all about doing what they think Chinese AI is for. Slanting the world in their favor.

It's not me, it's AI. It's the Wizard of Oz. Pay no mind to the guy behind the curtain.

1) That happens with everything, AI is not an exception. There'll be a lot of scams, but there'll also be companies that become giants out of it.

2) This is the weak AI/strong AI divide. You're correct that strong AI is so far out that it's not even worth thinking about, but the economic effects of applying a lot of weak AI all over the place are still enormous.

3) There was a lot of hype about the early internet, that doesn't mean it wasn't worthwhile. Something becomes really successful once it moves out of the hype phase and just becomes normal, like electricity and the internet.

4) Absolutely not. There's no simple software that can do things that weak AI does well like, for example, facial recognition and autonomous driving. Yes, there will be a lot of fraud and market bubbles, but China will not and must not turn its back on this technology - that would be the absolute stupidest move to play. Do you want a repeat of the Qing Dynasty?

As for where the money goes, yes, a lot of it will go to foreign chips (not every company is Huawei and under sanctions; in fact, the US has been intelligent enough not to sanction Chinese companies broadly). It's up to the government and key enterprises to push Chinese lithography forward until it's competitive on a global level. Once that happens, the government can introduce taxes and other punitive measures on companies that insist on buying foreign chips when adequate Chinese substitutes are available.
