Front line workers and those patients already in hospitals need them more for sure; but, having a nominal amount of face masks yourself and using them properly and appropriately would and could break the spread chain. Properly used in appropriate circumstances, it could at least decrease the viral load you would have otherwise.

I for one changed the privacy door knobs and handles in my home to brass ones last weekend. Every bits help.

My opinion is that regular people should wear normal masks while N95 masks should be reserved for the frontline health workers.

this is interesting, even references the way WW2 was financed:

also makes me repeat the question from previous page which is what the CIA was doing since the beginning of this year? by just reading newspapers their Analysts could figure the US would be hit

If you're coughing and sneezing consistently for no apparent reason, then you should be self-isolating and not going out in public. That's the main form of transmission in droplets in the air (hence why the 6ft distance) or on surfaces. If it was transmitting from breathing around people, a lot more people would be sick. And if you think it's transmitted through breaths of air, that mask isn't going to stop it.

Around the Super Bowl I was struck with an odd illness. I never experienced symptoms like that before. I checked the symptoms of coronavirus back then and it didn't match. Today I read the symptoms... maybe. I know I can trace it to a birthday party at a Chicago Pizza restaurant that I attended. Three people total, two adults and a child, who attended this party got sick at the same time afterwards. I conferred with the others and the other adult (the birthday boy) had near identical problems virtually in parallel. We started feeling sick at the same time. We were bed-ridden at the same time. Recovery was about the same time. At the time, the news about kids not being affected much from coronavirus did not reach the US. The kid that was at the party that got sick only had a minor illness. Was it coronavirus? I do not know. But I attended a Super Bowl party within a week afterwards with over a dozen people while I was as they say "asymptomatic" if it was coronavirus and then bed-ridden the next day and no one else got sick at that party. My family didn't get sick either.

There might be circumstances where you are in less than 6 feet of an asymptomatic person who is releasing low to medium load of droplets through normal breathing. How much is low and medium load? I don't have exact count but that's just for presenting the scenario.
Face masks alone wouldn't work, but it can be an effective part of overall strategy, including all other reasonable precautions.
Face masks are not fail safe, fool proof, either-or option, but used reasonably it can help you.

How do brass door handles help?

When you're around someone who is sneezing and coughing, those droplets aren't steering towards your mouth and nose. If you're in range, your eyes are exposed too. You have residue on your skin and clothes that you'll be touching and then when you take off that mask, you're touching your face near your mouth, nose, and eyes more than someone who doesn't have a mask because people are adjusting those masks while wearing them.

Its copper content. Current strain of CoV doesn't survive long on copper surface, 4 hours according to CDC and NHS.

I found old electrical wires and use the copper to wrap up all handles I can't switch out to brass ones, like toilet flush handles, for the time being until it's over. Cheap , easy and yet should be working to an extent.
