Ok I am going to ask a stupid question. Does the carrier really need 4 panel type 346 AESA radar, especially when it has no VLS.

last pic is the homeport of Liaoning; Shadong should be based in Sanya

That guy was saying these pictures were from the ship transfer ceremony (in Dalian, indoors) between the builder and the Navy. The commission ceremony happened days later in Sanya

With the current video clips and photos been released, we can't be sure if number 17 has been painted on the island yet.
If we watch the 19:00 CCTV news program on 17th, it is clear that 17 is not painted on the island. I am thinking maybe never. Afterall, why should it be on the island? Liaoning still does not have 16 on its island even though it has been sailing for a long time.

Being AESA and number of panel have nothing to do with VLS. AESA vs. mechanical steering radar are like automatic gearbox vs. mechanical gearbox in Cars. If power supply and power output is sufficient and of course cost, we would see all mechanical radars being replaced everywhere.
