China's Westward One Belt One Road Strategy

An additional reason beyond the usual anti-China ones that some in the west are particularly alarmed by China’s bet and road initiative might be based on the Heartland theory by Mackinder.

It is a geopolitical theory that if one nation could dominate the ‘heartland’ of the Eurasia supercontinent, it would dominate the world.

The theory was framed in a context of land based vs sea based power, which have particular resonance for traditional naval powers like Britain and America.

How much Chinese scholars and strategists are influenced by this theory I do not know, but Mackinder‘s work seems to still be well known and have much sway with western strategists.

As such, they see China’s belt and road as an attempt for China to control the heartland. As such, China needs to expect pretty strong attempts by America to sabotage the belt and road at every turn, so needs to prepare accordingly.

That's the job of China's MSS to find and eliminate those threats to the China's belt and road project. I believe China already expected this and has a plan to deal with it effectively.

I think Mackinder has only had a peripheral influence on Chinese strategy

It's just very, very difficult for one country or an alliance to dominate the world island.
The central Pivot Area of the world island is pretty much empty grassland, and it is the fringes that are the densely populated eg. Europe, East Asia and South Asia.
The distances involved means power projection and economic influence becomes increasingly weak as you approach the core territories in Europe, East Asia and South Asia.

I tried to do a search on the Moscow - Kazan HSR and I haven't seen much of late, with the latest news dating back to late 17'- early 18'. Anyone have some media sources from within Russian regarding the development?

As part of China’s signature BRI project for the country, the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, the two sides on Saturday signed agreements on railways linking China to Kyaukpyu on the Bay of Bengal in Rakhine, and a final agreement on the building of a deep-sea port there.

The deep-sea port in Kyaukpyu will be one of China's doorways to the Indian Ocean.

The railway to connect Dali (in the Middle of Yunnan) with Ruili (city that borders Myanmar) has been under construction since 2011 and will likely open in 2022 if there are no further delays. I suppose from there out they will build a railway line from Ruili to Mandalay and from Mandalay to the Indian Ocean.

According to skyscrapercity (copy paste from skyscrapercity not my words):

World's largest railway arch bridge is built structurally. It is Nu River Bridge for Dali-Ruili Railroad. There are 4 tracks on the bridge which also serves as a train station. The huge mountains on both sides prevent station being built at other places, except on the river. On its west side it is Gaoligong Mountain Tunnel, which is Chinese and also Asian longest rail tunnel, 34.5 km long. The main span of this bridge is 490 meters, which is also world's largest. The bridge is 212 meters high over the river surface.
