now and in the future, high sortie rates are needed for an efficient power projection

A Nimitz class can produce a very higher sortie rate if need be. From Nimitz history on wiki;

"Between 14–24 July 1997, Nimitz participated in Joint Task Force Exercise 97-2 (JTFEX 97-2) off the coast of southern California, which also served as a "Revolution in Strike Warfare" demonstration. The latter event was designed to demonstrate the capability of an aircraft carrier and its embarked air wing to project carrier-based airpower into littoral warfare.

On 20 July 1997, Nimitz and Carrier Air Wing Nine began a high-intensity strike campaign. When flight operations were completed four days later, Nimitz and Carrier Air Wing Nine had carried out 771 strike sorties while dropping 1,337 bombs on target. Carrier Air Wing Nine flew 975 fixed-wing sorties during this four-day surge operation. Almost 80 percent of the sorties flown were strike sorties, with strike support accounting for another 10 percent.

determined that Nimitz and Carrier Air Wing Nine could have maintained this high-sortie operational tempo for another twelve to twenty-four hours before requiring equipment maintenance, rest for its crews and its ordnance and aviation fuel stocks to be replenished".

I defy any other navy on planet Earth to produce CV sortie rates equal or greater than these.

In WW2 the Norwegians sank the heavy cruiser Blücher, the German's flagship, with coastal torpedos. The Germans later sank the Italian battleship Roma with the Fritz X glide bomb. In the right environment coastal defenses can be quite deadly. Especially so with modern guided weapons. So far the world's major navies have been lucky in that their major conflicts either had little in the way of anti-ship weapons or had their use denied to them.

I think it is a mistake to put the Ford-class into batch production before the major issues with the design are fixed. Otherwise it will be more of the F-35 concurrency nonsense except this time with multiple billions of dollars in ships. Even the Enterprise design got modified to make it cheaper to produce as the Nimitz class.

2014, see? they saw the PR STUNT (the Ford delivery) coming three years ago! another PR STUNT will soon follow (the Ford commissioning)

instead of requesting the vendor to deliver the product (and not jokes like the Zumwalt now and the Ford now), the USN accepts and commissions obviously unfinished ships, and I of course wouldn't talk about anything minor, I talk about for example the aircraft carrier unable to launch aircraft for years!

so, going back to that old article:
"The Navy plans to meet the $12.9 billion cost cap for its new aircraft carrier by accepting the ship unfinished and spending more money afterward ..."
I'll wait and see what the FINAL cost is, if they after coupla more years realized some 'transformational technologies' were actually botched etc.

Is it not connected to the decommissioning of the Enterprise?

It was decommissioned on the 3rd of February 2017, and in six month time they commissioned the Ford.

I presume that the Enterprise crew could loose lot of experience if they don't have another deployment.
