That chart looks like pure bs. Anyone can throw some flags and text on an arrow in photoshop. I could make a chart that says Seawolf is as loud as Victor III too.

China rejected leasing an Akula I like India, which is in line with estimates that the Shang is ~110db.

Also what was the chart making dude smoking when he put the Yuan BEHIND the Lada and the PLAN Imp. Kilo AHEAD of the Lada? I don’t know which statement is more ridiculous.

Did it? First time I heard China got the opportunity in the first place.

That IS strange. It could be that this is intended to reflect the impact of maintenance - some silencing measures require regular and scrupulous maintenance to remain effective (and indeed may do more harm than good in poor condition). I believe those charts are quite old, dating from a period where the Russian submarine force was facing an existential funding shortage.

Just goes to show that even a simplified schematic can be hiding a lot of complexity - with the diagram alone it is difficult to judge whether it can be dismissed.

Yeah agreed. Since this was published in 2009 I am not surprised they put the 039A ('Yuan') being louder than the Kilo 636. I believe the Yuan came in to service in 2006. Since then the 039A has gone through multiple improvements (039A -> 039AG -> 039B -> improved 039B also called 039C). And regarding the "St. Petersburg" class, according to wiki the 1st prototype was launched in 2004 and commisioned in 2010 but all subsequent subs of the class are are "heavily redesigned". So it is possible that the earliest sub ended up being louder than the Kilo 636? o_O

And to all, those diagram were released by the US Navy's Office of Naval Intelligence in 2009! Since then they have not released any info. This is why I say, if the PLAN's 093A has come close to the 688i or 971U then that is HUGE, HUGE leap when looking at the original 093.

The Lada class problems centered around the combat system and the advanced conformal sonar array (analogous to the Large Aperture Bow Array on Virginia Block III) AFAIK. Considering it predates Virginia Block III by almost a decade and was engineered in a very difficult funding environment it would be no surprise if the sonar in particular proved troublesome - it was/is extremely ambitious.

I've heard the Russians want an autonomous nuke armed cruise missile, is this the future? Since a limitation is food in today's SSBNs.

Has Chinese navy experimented with lead or sodium cooled fast reactors? Both Americans and Soviets had somewhat disappointing results but i'd wager it could be done.

Not the PLAN. Only the civilian institution building/testing/experimenting in the lab. But then, there is no real civilian/military distinction in terms of nuclear technology.

East Pendulum posted this tweet, showing images from CCTV that show something on the back of a Type 09IIIA. My impression is some kind of submersible.
Carrying canister for a Seal Delivery Vehicle type vehicle or a drone.
