Lokheed.
Northrop was actually playing with canards at that time.

I've avoided saying this until now, but of course this nameless wit is "absolutely correct", there's no doubt that canards do indeed raise your frontal RCS as opposed to tailplanes, that's why Northrup built the the YF-23 with the aft mounted "ruddervator", Northrupp's test pilot jokingly referred to the YF-23 as the world's fastest "Bonanza", referencing Beech's V tailed general aviation business airplane

Dr. Song and Yang Wei understand this as well, but realizing that OVT would be substantially delayed, perceived the distant coupled canard as their only viable means to significantly increase the "pitch rate" of the J-20, they added substantial dihedral to the canard in order to partially mitigate the effect of forward mounted control surfaces.

and NO! this is NOT a "design flaw", it is a means to an end, (very successful means by the way), and they were absolutely right, yet today OVT has only just now arrived on a Chinese designed and manufactured aircraft, the J-10C??

I only responded honestly, because posters were/are ridiculing someone who is 100% correct...

and Northrup or Boeing, possibly even Lockheed may in the future opt to build a canard aircraft for an L/O fighter?

First it’s important to state that there is no such thing as a ‘perfect plane’.

If the rumors about no gun is true, it would seem like a major flaw. The J20 has what amounts to 2x 195kN class engines with TVC along with a canard design, so it’s slated to have insane maneuverability. Not having a gun would be a huge waste of dogfighting potential.

J20 will most likely not have the “perfect stealth” of platforms like B2, CH 7 or H20 since an optimal stealth configuration doesn’t allow supersonic flight. Stealth is still a sector in it’s infancy and most designs need to compromise.

Cost might also be a major issue. The real cost is classified, but it’s easy to imagine a F22 class airframe with F35 class sensors and engines and PLAAF AESA will be prohibitively expensive. There’s not a lot of J20s to go around.

Actually the J-20 does NOT currently wear the WS-15 which is predicted to produce your 195kn thrust, and I wouldn't swear that when it does arrive it will be equipped with OVT nozzles... not wearing an internal gun does NOT present a design flaw, but a design decision, they made a conscious choice to go with an external gun pod should the need arise, due the complexity, weight, and expense of an internal gun...

I'm talking about finished ones. WS-15 is designed to have OVT, I'm not sure it's even possible to make a non OVT version without developing a new variant.

Not having an internal gun seems like a missed opportunity for what might be one of the best dogfighting planes. An external pod would ruin stealth would it not? That said, the J20s very good weight to size ratio might only be achievable by taking away the gun...

Well you threw me off when you used the word "has", "has" is in the present tense, possessive, of course the J-20 is currently flying with the Russian AL-31FN or the Chinese WS-10, Yang Wei did suggest that there is possibly a J-20 flying or going to Fly with the WS-10 with OVT??

When the WS-15 does come along? it may or may not have OVT, I personally like OVT, but I think the benefits are minimal for a BVR fighter aircraft, of course there are times when in spite of your best efforts, you may end up drawn into a "furball", then you would likely wish for an internal gun and OVT??

so it really boils down to what the customer needs/wants, Chengdu will build the J-20 that the Chinese military "spec out", real simple. If the Chinese Military wants an internal gun and OVT, Chengdu will build it, if they elect to leave those two items off, Chengdu will build that, so its really a question of what the Chinese Military deems advantageous for this beautiful airplane. If you watch the flight demo, the J-20 pulls through the vertical and back to airshow center very rapidly aerodynamically, so this airplane has a very rapid pitch transition due to its "distant coupled canards", no design flaws here, NONE!

thank you for your post clarifying your meaning/concerns, I hope this helps you understand that Chengdu is capable of giving the Chinese Military the airplane configuration that they, and they alone deem advantageous, just like LockMart has built the USAF, USN, and Marines the airplane they each want....

Check out Mr. Siege's video post immediately above, you will see the J-20 pull down very hard off the vertical line back to airshow center, in fact he back's off that very quickly, so I'm guessing he was in "sleepy time" high G territory, if you watch the whole video very carefully, you will see him rapidly transition from a very high G hard right, to a very high G hard left, now that will make your eyeballs rattle around in your head, and your inner ear do flip-flops, ask me how I know??

So the J-20 with present engines is a very high performance airplane capable of very rapid pitch, roll, and yaw transitions, see for yourself, and I do hope this helps, there are always nameless naysayers critiquing your work.... always.
