With all the hi-res pics of J20 coming out now, I'm 99.9% convinced she does NOT have an internal gun. While I admit I cannot identify a couple of panels, I'm however quite positive they aren't gunport covers.

Yep, there's really no denying that, and that's fine, this is primarily a BVR fighter aircraft, as is the F-22, and they have elected to save weight and complexity by leaving it off and relying on their AAM, not a problem, just a philosophy, the Marines and Navy left the internal gun off their F-35B and F-35C respectively?? the USAF specked the A model with an internal gun??

You have to consider one thing; the Chinese has traditional of placing an aircraft gun under the belly. I think it is for easy cartridge ejection because the Chinese does not have the complex system like the U.S that recycle the used cartridges back into the drum. Further, I look at the hi-re photos above, I don't see anything look like a gun cover. Gun cover can't be completely flat.

J-20 has enough curve above the inlet area. It is not flat at all.

First it’s important to state that there is no such thing as a ‘perfect plane’.

If the rumors about no gun is true, it would seem like a major flaw. The J20 has what amounts to 2x 195kN class engines with TVC along with a canard design, so it’s slated to have insane maneuverability. Not having a gun would be a huge waste of dogfighting potential.

J20 will most likely not have the “perfect stealth” of platforms like B2, CH 7 or H20 since an optimal stealth configuration doesn’t allow supersonic flight. Stealth is still a sector in it’s infancy and most designs need to compromise.

Cost might also be a major issue. The real cost is classified, but it’s easy to imagine a F22 class airframe with F35 class sensors and engines and PLAAF AESA will be prohibitively expensive. There’s not a lot of J20s to go around.
