I don't think Kamov did the detail design Kamov did the preliminary design since Kamov own the simulating software. China does not own any software at that time and you cannot buy off shelve
It specify the performance requirement of the engine, rotor etc, give general lay out of the heli, aerodynamic requirement etc
By the time it come to detail design Kamove does not have any involvement
But China did the detail design(structure, control, aerodynamic) and select and manufacture their own component

The Chinese likely did most of the developmental work, but the initial concept and hence much of the helicopter's external shape & configuration was indeed conceived by Kamov.

But the production model deviate from the original prototype See Hyperwarp pic. It also mean they did redesign the the heli
None of the subsystem like rotor blade, transmission gear avionic, flight instrument, navigation, weapon, engine, Electric warfare, Opto electronic, night vision,Software, radar, are Russian

In other word Kamov only design paper machine As I said China does not have the software to do the design at that time So they have to contracted it out

The main contractor of the avionics of Z-10 is the 613th Research Institute, which was responsible for integrating all of the avionics subsystems provided by subcontractors. Although foreign technologies are utilized (particularly French and Israeli, as rumored), this is limited to hardware only. All software applicable to Z-10 are completely indigenously developed by China on its own. Reportedly, the most time consuming part of the software engineering for Z-10 was to develop all of the mathematic models needed for Z-10. Instead of using French standard DIGIBUS, Z-10 is built to Chinese GJV289A standard, the Chinese equivalent of

B. The adaptation of western military standard means that western weaponry can be readily deployed on Z-10, and the developer claims that all it needed was to add a module or interface to accomplish this. The ease of being compatible with multiple weaponry would also help to expand the export market of Z-10 in the future.

What do you mean the WZ-9 has already been upgraded ? The WZ-9 is an engine that was developed more than a decade ago. Considering the advances that China's aviation industry made the last decade why wouldn't they be able to get 25% more power out of that engine ?

Well according to this post -

, the engine in the Z-10ME is called WZ-9G.

That refer to the present engine for Z10ME the larger engine is not yet installed It is planned for the future
A new engine will be installed that may increase the chopper's maximum power from 935 kilowatts to 1,200 kilowatts. The Z-10ME also has improved mobility, protection and firepower, the article said.

They are lucky if they can coaxed 10% more output It is old design
Otherwise why should Z10 only carry 8 ATGM instead of 16 ATGM since WZ 9 is the same engine that power Z10
They better re engine Z10 first since it will give more power higher ceiling, more maneuverable, longer range

The only way to increase power is increase temperature which is difficult to achieve in turboshaft engine which work slightly different than turbo fan
It would be easier to just have new engine

Is it just me, or does the panels look a little too thin? Makes me worried that armour had been sacrificed for weight savings. A bit of a dangerous trade-off to make in an attack helicopter.
More so when we read point 4 of By78's list.
Honestly, how could the T129 or Z-10 (5 - 5.5t) be rated an Apache rival (7.5 - 10t) ???

That would be like calling the C919 a rival to the A380 or B747.
Or rather in this case I think it would be like comparing a medieval knight to a cavalry soldier.
Yeah they both move fast and the cav soldier can range longer but if they are facing resistance the knight has armor. A higher chance of survival vs the Calvarymen who at most has a leather jacket.

So the 1200+ kW turboshaft is still not ready?

Documentary on the development of Z10 via Beast

A documentary development of Z-10 gunship.
According to him
The gunship is very quiet and agile. Engine is 100% made in China. It suffer the same fate as Indian LCA as increase of combat subsystem added in, result in helo overweight. In order to ensure thrust to weight ratio. A massive weight reduction was carried out during its development which included major redesign. Armour and combat capabilities were not compromised. Combat payload remained the same but range increase as a result. Z-10 is the longest range gunship compare to others like Apache, Cobra, Roovalik, Mi-28 , Ka-50 and Tiger.

During avidart competition, Z-10 beat Mi-28 and Ka-50 in terms of combat effectiveness like speed of hunting target and accuracy shot. The chief designer claimed Z-10 is rank top 3 gunship in the world in terms of overall combat capabilities.

New armor material boosts attack chopper’s capability
By Liu Xuanzun Source:Global Times Published: 2018/10/10 23:08:46

The Chinese Z-10 attack helicopter is now equipped with extra armor involving graphene, a material that is strong and light, a Chinese military expert said on Wednesday after the State broadcaster featured the helicopter.

Video released by China Central Television last week showed the Z-10 landing in an airfield. Extra armor modules could be seen on the side of the helicopter near the cockpit.

Chinese helicopters, including the Z-10, did not have extra armor because their engines could only lift a certain weight, Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst, told the Global Times on Wednesday, noting that the choice was made so that the Z-10 could carry a sufficient payload.

The extra armor shown in the broadcast is likely made of graphene, which is strong and light, and would solve the weight problem, Wei said.

Chinese researchers at the Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials developed graphene materials that can be used for making armor and bullet vests, chinanews.com reported in 2016.

It said that graphene is about 200 times stronger than steel, can stretch an extra 20 percent, and weighs only 0.77 gram a cubic meter.

Attack helicopters like the Z-10 often fly low to attack ground targets, making them vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire, Wei said.

The extra armor can effectively protect key parts of the helicopter, like the cockpit and the fuel tank, from being directly hit, thus greatly expanding the aircraft's chance of survival, he said.

Wei said he expects graphene-based armor to be mass-produced and to also be used on other aircraft, noting its high efficiency and low cost.

Z-10ME, a modified and export version for Z-10, is ready for business, Chinese military analysts said.

Graphene is usually quoted as being 20 times lighter than steel. That would make a cubic meter weigh 400 kg. Roughly 0.008 kg per cubic cm. Or 4 kg for a square meter plate 1 cm thick. Though, in reality, armor would probably be several thin layers with some mesh structure in between.
