The Main-Armament Level Of Warships Entering Service

Dec 24, 2017
well now I searched the net to find

"Sea Ceptors are described as having a range 'in excess of 25 kilometres (15.15 miles)', as opposed to the 1–10 km of their predecessors, although IHS Jane's reports that trials have a shown a capability of up to 60 km."

I also noted in an older BAE leaflet

about CAMM-ER:

"Missile Characteristics
• Range: >45 km against multiple targets"

anyone?
interestingly, NavalToday refers to the Sea Ceptor with "short-range shield" now:

now, new candidates for mediocre armament:
  1. Type 26 (8k displacement) with 48 Sea Ceptors only (this assumes no Mk 41 VLS, or Mk 41 VLS installed with an empty air);
  2. Type 31 (3?k displacement) also with just Sea Ceptors;
...
and oops, this week became aware of one of the contenders for Type 31 displacing the whopping "approximately 5,700 tonnes" according to

... the last sentence: "The Type 31 programme is the most realistic hope for an increase in numbers, though the five promised are not yet even in the MoD equipment funding plan."

...

anyway I'm curious what the armament would be if they were ever built: the budget for the five of Type 31 is assumed to be one and a quarter billion Pounds,
so what does a quarter of a billion pounds buys in addition to the hull?

I thing it's going to be nothing except of the main gun and a small array with Sea Ceptors, making Type 31 an oversized OPV, as:

"... an Iver Huitfeldt frigate ... about $207 million, goes to weapons, sensors, and other electronics, which drive the cost of modern warships worldwide."

(EDIT thought it'd be more, because I wrongly expected 'entry fee' for Mk 41 VLS above $100m; Finland might get it for $70m:

plus I've read somewhere the cost per 1 m of length = 1 m Pounds (I think this includes propulsion, LOL if you know what I mean now); assuming it's true,
250-140=110m Pounds, which is around $150m

"The large deck area ... can also house the Mk41 vertical launching system (VLS) with up to 32 variable length tubes."

LOL I don't doubt almost 6k displacing ships could "house" Mk41

let's wait and see what they'll get in reality though

pulling this:
It doesn't need new larger missiles yet the MK57 VLS is backwards compatible with existing inventory. IE missiles from the current Burke can be loaded in the MK57.

I now looked at this relatively modest fan-art:

(it's relatively modest when compared to other fan-art)

УКСК (= универсальный корабельный стрельбовый комплекс)
3 ВПУ (= вертикальная пусковая установка), 48 cells in each, total 144 cells
it basically means VLS for Kalibrs, possibly other cruise missiles in the future

ЗРК (= зенитный ракетный комплекс)
"Редут" (as in

)
5 ВПУ as above, 5*48=240 cells
it basically means area-defense missile system (anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense)

the sum would be whopping 384 cells :)

had they installed just six arrays, they would've been (with 6*48=288 tubes while displacing 28k) close to the line:

the square represents 1.0 k-displacing Project 21631 (so called Buyan-M with eight so called Kalibrs: if you want to nitpick or don't know what I talk about, please skip reading this); 8 tubes in total

the circle symbol represents 2.5 k-displacing Project 20385 (8 Kalibrs, 16 cells of so called Redut: again, don't nitpick!); 24 tubes in total

the upward-pointing triangle symbol represents 3.6 k-displacing Incheon-II (8 Korean AShMs, 16 cells Korean VLS); 24 tubes in total

the downward-pointing triangle symbol represents 4.0 k-displacing Project 11356 (8 Kalibrs, 16 cells of so called Shtil: again, don't nitpick!); 32 tubes in total

the diamond symbol represents 4.1 k-displacing Type 054A (32 cells VLS; 8xC-803); 40 tubes in total

the left-pointing triangle symbol represents 5.4 k-displacing Project 22350 (16 Kalibrs, 32 cells of Redut: don't start nitpicking here); 48 tubes in total

the right-pointing triangle symbol represents 5.5 k-displacing KDX-II (32 cells of Mk 41 VLS, 32 cells of Korean VLS, 8 Korean AShMs); 72 tubes in total

the hexagon symbol represents 7.5 k-displacing Type 052D (64 cells VLS); 64 tubes in total

the star symbols represents 11.0 k-displacing KDX-III (80 cells of Mk 41 VLS, 32 cells of Korean VLS, 16 Korean AShMs); 144 tubes in total

and finally, the pentagon (sorry! LOL) symbol represents 12 k-displacing Type 055 with 112 cells VLS, 112 tubes in total

as you can see below, these ships MORE OR LESS follow the trend of ten tubes per one thousand metric tons of full displacement; they're WARSHIPS

Jura would have loved the Earlier concepts for the DD21 called for far more VLS. between 64 and 128 VLS cells. As the Program evolved from DD21 to DDG 1000 they reduced the numbers and changed the mission. IT went from a Multi mission ship ( proper replacement for the Burke) to a primarily land attack ( emphisis on Naval gun fire support) with more space allocated to the AGS the VLS numbers dropped.
DD21 was also supposed to have ASW capabilities. Those were all dropped as the US shifted from conventional war mindset to Asymmetric.
