I am thinking more on the location of the airbases rather than the units.

Shanghai and Fuzhou bases are just by the side of the coast. Wuhu is about 300km inland. J-20 is a long legged fighter. J10, J7 are short legged fighter, J16, Su30MKK are bombers, only J11B is a long legged fighter.

Could it be that PLAF choose the location rather than unit because they want to have J-20 less exposed to signal collection by SIGNT? Less chance being spotted when taking off, then fly low, therefor more surprise to potential adversary?

Not even the US is able to that anymore.
?
The US still has 2 proper fighter houses(not sure if NG still counts as one, even if Grumman certainly did)
Lockheed recently has kinda eaten too much, but Boeing still has relevant MD team.

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's latest J-20 stealth fighters have been commissioned into air force combat service, a spokesperson confirmed Friday.
The J-20 is China's fourth-generation medium and long-range fighter jet. It made its maiden flight in 2011 and was first shown to the public at the 11th Airshow China in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in November 2016.

Interesting part in bold. Sometimes stated combat radius/range is +/- 2000/5000,which is by no means medium.
Drop tanks then?

The 7th had J-7E until mid 2017.

So we had:

- the 7th with J-7E now being replaced by J-16s
- the 8th with J-10A/AS
- the 9th with Su-30MKK (eventualyl being replaced by J-20)

My point is that it would seem to make more logical sense on paper to replace the 9th MKK with J-16 if both are updated anyway. Or does anyone know if the 9th have a particular history that might single them out for a prestige role, overriding operational logic?

Deino

IIRC 9th brigade was the first to equip Su27sk (first 4th gen fighter operated by China) in 1992, and the first to accept su30 in 2000. First post here btw, hi Deino, hi everyone.

Rumor has it that these photos are still from Chengdu. I doubt we have images of the combat ready ones yet.

But again that's my concern ... this video and these images are not from this alleged "new" unit - by their serial 78272 from the well known unit - and also the others are from the parade and from Zhuhai...

So are these "merely" J-20As from the well known unit temporarily assigned to on operational mission at Wuhu?
