BEIJING, Jan. 16 (ChinaMil) -- China's 2nd homegrown barracks ship has arrived in Dalian city of northeastern China's Liaoning Province to meet with China's 2nd aircraft carrier, according to recent reports.

As a unique type of warship in the aircraft carrier vessels battle groups (CVBG) of the PLA Navy, the ship has very advanced living support facilities including plastic runway, basketball court, gym, arena, Internet cafe and supermarket.

The ship is mainly used for accommodation for crew members, pilots, aviation crews and engineering and technical personnel during sea trial periods. It is a military quasi-luxury cruise ship.

The barracks ship is a cool idea. "R&R with chinese characteristics"

Guys .... it just like Kindergarten or an internal quarrel similar to my class.

Come on - both - stay polite and everything is fine.

By the way, a political different opinion is fine but please - also both - leave these constant side-kicks either to the other political opinion or person.

China has issued a strong warning about the risks facing Sino-US relations after a US warship entered waters surrounding Huangyan Island in the South China Sea, and a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Saturday "necessary measures" will be taken to safeguard the country's sovereignty

When responding to a relevant question from the press, spokesperson Lu Kang confirmed that the USS Hopper, a guided missile destroyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Chinese island on Wednesday evening without Chinese government's permission.

According to Lu, the Chinese Navy has conducted an identification and warning process to drive the US warship away.

Lu said the US warship has impaired China's sovereignty and security interests, and caused a serious threat to Chinese vessels and personnel working in the area.

The spokesperson said the US side's behavior has broken basic protocols of international relations, voicing China's strong dissatisfaction.

"China will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty," he said.

Lu reiterated that China has indisputable sovereignty over Huangyan Island and its adjacent waters.

"China respects and safeguards the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea for all countries in accordance with international law, but resolutely opposes any country's move to impair China's sovereignty and security interests in the name of freedom of navigation and overflight," Lu said.

"We strongly urge the US to rectify its mistake immediately and cease this kind of provocation so as not to harm Sino-US relations and regional peace and stability," he said.

China's Defense Ministry Spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian also confirmed on Saturday that Chinese frigate "Huangshan" carried out the identification check after the US destroyer entered waters near Huangyan Island illegally and warned it to leave.

Wu said the situation in the South China Sea has become more stabilized after joint efforts between China and ASEAN countries. However, the US has repeatedly dispatched ships to waters near islands in the area, which threatened China's sovereignty and security and harmed regional peace and stability.

The behavior of the US navy runs counter to the momentum of stable development between Sino-US relations, Wu said.

"US should respect China's sovereignty and the efforts made among countries in the region," Wu noted, adding that the Chinese navy will continue to carry out its defense duties while increasing patrol in the area. The Chinese army will firmly defend the country's sovereignty and security and maintain the peace and stability of the region.

China accuses U.S. warship of violating its sovereignty

A U.S. Navy destroyer sailed near a disputed territory claimed by China in the South China Sea earlier in the week, U.S. officials said on Saturday, as China’s foreign ministry said it would take “necessary measures” to ensure protection of its sovereignty.

The incident occurred as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration seeks Chinese cooperation in dealing with North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs.

On Wednesday evening, the USS Hopper missile destroyer came within 12 nautical miles of Huangyan Island in the South China Sea, China’s foreign ministry said on its website on Saturday.

Huangyan Island, also known as the Scarborough Shoal, is a disputed territory claimed by the Philippines as well as China.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Hopper had sailed within 12 nautical miles of Scarborough Shoal earlier this week.

The officials said the patrol took place in accordance with international law and was an “innocent passage,” in which a warship effectively recognizes a territorial sea by crossing it quickly, without stopping.

Twelve nautical miles is the territorial limit recognized internationally.

The U.S. military has a longstanding position that such operations are carried out throughout the world, including in areas claimed by allies, and that they are separate from political considerations.

In a statement, the Pentagon did not directly comment on the patrol but said the United States routinely carries out “freedom of navigation” operations, a summary of which would be released in an annual report.

“All operations are conducted in accordance with international law and demonstrate that the United States will fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows,” Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Logan said.

The U.S. military put countering China and Russia at the center of a new national defense strategy unveiled on Friday.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the ship violated China’s sovereignty and security interests and threatened the safety of the nation’s vessels and personnel in the vicinity.

China’s navy ordered the vessel to withdraw after determining its identity, Lu was quoted as saying.

The United States has criticized China for constructing islands and military installations in the region, saying they could be used to restrict free nautical movement. U.S. vessels have conducted a series of freedom of navigation patrols in the region.

China “firmly opposes” efforts to use freedom of navigation as an excuse to hurt its sovereignty and urges the United States to “correct its mistakes,” Lu said.

In a separate statement on Saturday, China’s defense ministry said the repeated dispatch of U.S. warships to the region was “undermining regional peace and stability” and hurting bilateral relations.

Getting within 12 nautical miles is asking for war. Can't understand the point of it. Freedom of navigation does not apply to other nation's territorial waters. If this is a precedence then China can apply the same logic to Japan.

It is based on UNCLOS that US did not sign (calling it "absolutely ridiculous")

The PCA also revealed itself as the kangaroo court that it was by blatantly ignoring China’s opting out of arbitration and also the fact that Chinese claims to the SCS predate UNCLOS, and that China specifically grandfathered in those claims when it signed up to UNCLOS.

You only need to see the indecent haste the ICJ distanced itself from the PCA after that farcical ruling to see just how unsound it was.

LOL The situation is a reflection of how Chinese/US navies are so far ahead of those near SCS, even with the political power (read, arm twisting) of the United States they can't even find a cannon fodder that does it for them. I hope I am bringing it back to a military discussion with this.
