Turkey’s state-owned company Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK) announced that it has registered its first overseas sales for the MPT-76 assault rifle.

reports that 450 MPT-76 rifles were delivered to Somalia, while the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus ordered 2,500 rifles.

the MPT-76 in January. Turkey’s Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) issued its launch order of 15,014 MPT-76 rifles for $18 million U.S. in December 2015. Besides MKEK, the Turkish companies Kalekalip and Sarsilmaz will also produce the rifle.

Chambered for 7.62×51 mm, the MPT-76 will replace Turkish Army’s Heckler & Koch (HK) G-3 battle rifles. The MPT-76 is also a piece of Turkey’s efforts to indigenize its supply of armaments. Turkish officials describe the MPT-76 as being ‘effective as the G-3, as reliable as the AK-47 and as practical as the M-16.’ It has a range of up to 600 m and can fire 600 rounds per minute at a muzzle velocity of 800 m per second.

MKEK also has a 5.56×45 mm variant, i.e. MPT-55.

Notes & Comments:

The MPT-76 is derived from the popular AR-15 platform, which has spurred the development of several other assault rifle models, such as the Caracal CAR-817AR, Ukroboronprom

and the venerable HK-416 from the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine and Germany, respectively. Firearm makers have managed to chamber the platform for 7.62×51 mm, 5.56×45 mm and 7.62×39 mm.

In 2016, MKEK had also marketed the MPT-76 to Pakistan for the latter’s assault rifle evaluation program. The Deputy Undersecretary of the SSM Mustafa Şeker told

that MKEK sent 200 pre-production rifles (from Turkish Army stocks) to Pakistan, where they were put through summer and winter tests. The MPT-76 had several critical issues during its summer trials, which MKEK promised to correct with its serial production version.

Turkish procurement saga weighs Russian S-400 deal against pleasing the West
The past couple of weeks have seen a thick layer of fog surrounding Turkey’s controversial, multibillion-dollar program for the procurement of the country’s first long-range air and missile defense shield.

There have been official contradictory statements reminiscent of confusion in the summer of 2013 when a Defense News story claimed that Turkey would select the Chinese bidder in a four-way competition (against U.S., European and Russian rivals). Three months after that story, in September 2013, the Turkish government announced that it selected China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corporation for the program.

In 2015, Turkey scrapped the bidding and an initial deal with CPMIEC. And in early 2017, Turkish officials said they were close to a deal with Russia for the procurement of the S-400 system.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Oct. 13 that Turkey was also interested in acquiring a future Russian air and anti-missile system, the S-500 — which is under development.

“In our talks with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, we are not thinking of stopping with the S-400s. We have had talks on the S-500s, too,” Erdogan said.

But according to Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, the S-400 deal involved joint production, not direct sale. “If Russia doesn’t want to comply, we’ll make an agreement with another country,” Cavusoglu said Oct. 9 following reports that Russia was reluctant to share the technology.

Just a day before that, on Oct. 8, a senior opposition politician who had visited Washington said Turkey had contacted the U.S. with the intention of acquiring the Patriot system “two to three weeks ago.” He said he was briefed on the discussion by U.S. officials.

A top Turkish procurement official who is part of the S-400 negotiations said Oct. 26 that talks with the Russians have successfully progressed and are about to be completed.

“There is agreement on every technological issue,” he said. “Negotiations are progressing further. The two sides are now discussing financing for the program, with a few technical details remaining to be agreed upon. They concern the terms of financing.”

He said the S-400 deal would be direct acquisition, not co-production. He also said that a future co-production deal for the S-500 system was unlikely because Turkey also had selected a foreign partner for its indigenous air and anti-missile architecture.

Talks with the European Eurosam group have been progressing since 2016 for the co-production of the SAMP/T system, designed for medium- and long-range air defense.

“Eurosam will sign a contract with two Turkish companies for the co-production program later this year, probably quite soon,” the official said.

The two Turkish prime contractors are state-controlled military electronics firm Aselsan, Turkey’s largest defense company, and missile-maker Roketsan.

If NATO-member Turkey signs up for the S-400s, it will have signed an air-defense deal with two non-NATO countries in the span of four years.

for Turkey should the alliance member purchase a Russian air-defense system. Political analysts anticipate Ankara will come under pressure from its NATO allies.

Gen. Petr Pavel, chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, recently said that while each nation is free to make its own defense decisions, Turkey’s planned buy of the S-400 system would preclude Ankara from being part of any integrated air-defense system with NATO allies and may result in other technical restrictions.

“The principal of sovereignty obviously exists in acquisition of defense equipment, but the same way that nations are sovereign in making their decision, they are also sovereign in facing the consequences of that decision,” Pavel told a group of reporters at an event hosted by the Defense Writers Group.

It's like Apple telling everyone if you buy Samsung headphones and plug'em on your iPhone, they won't work and Apple will revoke your warranty. Kinda funny though, dictating to country on what they can or cannot buy.

TURKEY DELIBERATES OVER DEFENCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS WORTH $5 BILLION

TAI-ATAK-2-TAI-01-692x360.jpg

Turkey’s Defence Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) has reviewed 22 proposed and ongoing defence industry programs worth $5 billion U.S. on November 02.

Chaired by Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, the meeting also included the Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu, Deputy Minister of National Defence Şuyay Alpay, Undersecretary of Defence Industries (SSM) İsmail Demir, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence Ali Fidan and the Turkish Armed Forces’ (TSK) Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar.

In a statement released by Prime Minister Yıldırım, the SSİK had deliberated upon the development of Turkey’s national long-range surface-to-air missile system; various guided munitions; electronic warfare systems; grenade launchers; continued small arms development and production; development of naval platforms and munitions; and the development and production of attack and utility helicopters.

Notes & Comments:

Of the programs the SSİK deliberated upon, several of them are newly announced projects, such as Turkish Aerospace Industries’ (TAI)

attack helicopter and 10-ton general purpose transport helicopter.

The ATAK-2 will have a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of six tons, making it heavier than the five-ton T129 ATAK. The ATAK-2 will share the engine, dynamic parts and transmission of the TAI T625 utility helicopter, thus reducing operating costs and streamlining maintenance and logistics inputs. The 10-ton general purpose helicopter will aim to be analogous to S-70i Black Hawk or NH-90.

The long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) program appears to be proceeding, with the

Ankara is also in the process of acquiring the Almaz-Antey S-400 from Russia, but the Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, Gen. Petr Pavel,

that Turkey will be prevented from entering into NATO’s integrated air defence network should it acquire the S-400. It is not known if the Turkish-Eurosam SAM program will help bridge the trust deficit to enable Turkey to join NATO’s air defence umbrella.

However, several Turkish analysts, among them retired Turkish Army Brig. Gen Haldun Solmazturk, are

that Ankara will push ahead with the S-400 given NATO’s concerns and geo-political realities (e.g. the sanctions on Russia). These analysts point to Ankara’s insistence for technology transfer from Russia for the S-400 (knowing that Moscow will refuse) as a possible exit strategy from the deal.

TURKEY CONFIRMS THAT IT HAS SIGNED FOR AND ORDERED THE S-400

Contrary to reports and uncertainty among observers and analysts, Turkey’s Minister of Defence Nurettin Canikli

that the Turkish government has “completed” its order for the Almaz-Antey S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system from Russia.

Following-up on Canikli’s statement, the Turkish parliamentarian Ahmet Berat Conkar, also the head of a Turkish delegation to NATO,

: “Turkey’s picked S-400 over other options because the missile system possesses more advanced technical features than its rivals, with a better price and shorter delivery time.”

Ankara’s affirmation comes amid uncertainty stemming from earlier statements made by Gen. Petr Pavel, the chairman of NATO’s Military Committee. Gen. Pavel had essentially warned that a Turkish acquisition of the S-400 could have “consequences” beyond the question of interoperability.

However, it appears that the S-400 deal had effectively been finalized since late September, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Ankara had paid Moscow a deposit for the system. The Russian side (via Presidential Aide Vladimir Kozhin)

receiving the payment.

In parallel, Turkey’s Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) commissioned Aselsan and Roketsan to produce a NATO-compliant long-range SAM system. In July, the SSM, Aselsan and Roketsan

a “Heads of Agreement” (HoA) with Eurosam, a French-Italian consortium responsible for the MBDA Aster-30 based SAMP/T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain).

Eurosam will assist Aselsan and Roketsan in the Turkish long-range SAM program, which was initiated following a collapse in talks for the HQ-9 system from China.

“In addition to the S-400, Turkey also made preliminary agreements with the Eurosam countries to develop, produce and use the air defense system in order to improve its long-term domestic national capacity,” said Defence Minister Canikli (via

), adding, “We especially aim to have our own technology.”

The marquee missile of the S-400 is the 40N6, which confers the system an engagement range of 400 km. The 40N6 is complemented by the 48N6, 9M96E2 and 9M96E, which provide 250 km, 120 km and 60 km in range, respectively. The S-400 has also drawn interest from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and, reportedly, from

Well this is an interesting development. Turkey chose to go for both the S-400 Triumphs, as well as the Euro-SAMs. I wonder why though. Could it be to keep NATO happy?
No vice versa....

Turkey choose S-400 because wants to annoy NATO...Turkey is using the S400 as a political tool..

Turkey choose EUROSAM because Turkey needs it.

Turkey needs a system that can work in the NATO network and own network.

Turkey needs western-originated SAMs for next destroyers and frigates.

Turkey needs TOT for own indigenous air defense sistems.Turkey can not take it from Russia...
