Mods, we should change the carrier's name to 002, which is its official designation.
We have had numerous sources tell us that the vessel is Type 001A and is CV-17:

So, until we have some offical word from the Chinese government or the PLAN itself, we will leave it as is.

If you have a link from an officail PRC or PLAN source, please post the link so we can read it, or translate it if necessary.

From now on in my postings the lable "project 002" is for the carrier outfitting in Dalian and "project 003" is for the next carrier to be build.

However we all have to admit that none of these "sources" is a direct first hand one and only re-use what others posted If I write in any of my books or reports something about a certain Chinese designation it would have the same "lower" credibility like these ... fact is, we simply had nothing official for the new carrier (so far 001A - now 002) and the projected one (so far 002 - now eventually 003). Similar that name "Shandong", CV-17 and so on are pure guesswork.

But it seems to me that this changed since yesterday and even if I agree with You to be cautious, I have to admit I tend to believe, the new designations are finally out. Why all the years the true ones were never revealed, not even by any of the otherwise reliable "Big Shrimps" surprises me ...

My suggestion therefore would be to rename both threads to the following names:

Type 002 (former Type 001A) Aircraft Carrier News & Discussion
Type 00X/003 (former Type 002) Aircraft Carrier News & Discussion

Just an idea,

If it is not "type ..." but "project ...", then it is easy to distinguish from the previous nomenclature.

Hu ??? Did I miss something ? Since when are they called as "Project" ??

I am following the interpretation of the Chinese nomenclature in *this* post, which I consider plausible and useful:

"Actually the numbers 001, 002, 003... are internal project codes, not "Type" as in Type 052D. So there is no such things as 001A, 002A, 002B (as in Type 052B, Type 052C ... ...). The internal project code is for one ship only. We have 001 which is Liaoning. Then we will soon have 002 which is being outfitted. The next carrier will be 003, and the next will be 004 so on and so forth. But there won't be multiple ships of 003, as 003 is not a Type."

Importantly, the addition "CV-" does not fit at all to Chinese aircraft carriers. For example, to think about it, we do not call R08 Queen Elizabeth "CV-8".
