I have mixed feelings about Chinese authorities knuckling under Western pressure and releasing videos for appeasement. I empathize and sympathize with Jiang Tianyong's family and friends on assuring proper treatment of the "human rights" lawyer. I'd do the same if he was a friend or family member. I also think US should pursue its interests, and clearly address issues it is at odds with China. But, the Chinese government shouldn't kowtow to hypocritic Westerners when they indulge in selective moral outrage. It seems to be a hobby with these people. In stead, China should release official statements on Jiang and all detainees' proper treatment under Chinese laws and leave it at that. Chinese laws.

Police in central China have released a video of a detained former human rights lawyer to try to quell claims that he was being tortured in custody.

But the authorities continued to ignore his lawyer’s requests to see him.

Police in Changsha, Hunan province, released the footage of prominent rights campaigner Jiang Tianyong on their social media account on Thursday.

The clip purportedly showed Jiang in good health, walking along a corridor while detained at an unspecified residence.

The post came after claims surfaced online that the activist had been tortured until his legs had swollen so much that he could no longer walk or stand.

Showing evidence isn't really kowtowing to anybody. It's to Beijing's advantage to show the world that these so-called "human rights activists" are just bloody liars out for their own gain. It shows that these are just criminals, and conniving little resource thieves and swindlers when they seek refuge status in another country. If they lied about being tortured, then what aren't they lying about?

Very dumb thing to do by the bikers. I haven't read the story, but if you have a camera or you witness something, report it to the police. Doing this really endangers themselves. If the range rover driver was crazy, a lot of bikers would be hurt. If one of the bikers were wrong, and all of them ganged up on the range rover, this give them a really bad reputation. This is like a lose lose situation.

China apparently killed/jailed 20 CIA spies between 2010 and 2012, hobbling American spying efforts. One guy was shot in between his eyes in front of all his buddies. CIA even now doesn't know how it happened, whether it was a leak, a mole, a hack, etc... They go on to say the Russians don't play around either; China and Russia are the hardest countries to set up spy rings in. I'll take that as a compliment.

LOL I can't tell if they're complaining or admiring the handiwork of an adversary...

It's a complaint. If it were the other way around no one would be crying over Chinese spies being killed. It's like Donald Rumsfeld holding his anti-China grudge because his best friend was shot down over China on a spy mission in the 1950s. That's the risk. If China were regularly flying spy planes over the US, we wouldn't hear 24/7 how China violated international law?

Also those spies weren't American or we would've heard a lot more about it when it happened. We would've heard how they were some innocent tourist or businessman that Chinese police randomly picked up for no reason and the theme in the media would be the US doesn't engage in such activities. Since we haven't seen stories like that... they were guilty and got caught.

This happened while US tried to organize a "Jasmine revolution" in China so it is no wonder that China reacted strongly. The wiki gives a different picture from what I remember:

It seems just so impossible to complain about it, though LOL. If you admit they were spies, how can you complain that your adversary dispatched them? You're supposed to catch and dispatch foreign spies. I mean, what would be the complaint? When Chinese agents found out, were they supposed to throw a party and fill the pinata with "Busted" confetti? It's almost a congratulatory article on a job well-done! And yet, congratulating someone for this is kinda... strange. I don't get the tone of the article but I get the facts.
