and have a question:

"... NIFC-CA generally relies on the Link-16 data link to connect the ships, planes and weapons involved in the detect-to-kill process. F-35, however, uses a Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) instead, which would require a new antenna on the destroyers that will launch a missile based on what the F-35B senses. Sheridan said Lockheed Martin has conceptual designs for where to put the MADL antenna on the ship but needs to refine and test those ideas."

why not to use Link16 of an F-35 (instead of putting MADL on a ship)??

How did the F-35 program turn around the opinion of President Donald Trump, who before his inauguration said the program was too expensive and “out of control” but recently has spoken of it favorably? “What I think came out” of several discussions with the President, was “his desire to learn more about the program, which is good,” and “to get good value” from the program, said program executive officer Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan at a McAleese/Credit Suisse conference Wednesday. “We got a chance to address some of the misperceptions” that Trump seems to have retained from early in the program, when it was having serious trouble. A lot of which continue to be related by critics as recent news. “Given that opportunity, we were able to explain the importance” of the F-35, Bogdan related.

More than 200 F-35s have been delivered, and after 15 years of production, the new fighter actually suffers from “vanishing vendor syndrome,” program executive officer Christopher Bogdan told attendees at a McAleese/Credit Suisse conference in Washington on Wednesday. Some of the early-lot airplanes “require as many as 150 modifications” to bring them up to the current configuration, Bogdan said. “That’s how many changes we’ve made,” he explained. Managing parts to make new airplanes while procuring or fixing now-obsolete parts is a “challenging undertaking,” he added. He’s not sure when that backlog will be worked off, but he the program is developing a worldwide support system so that airplanes, when they need repair or refit, “don’t have to cross two oceans” to get it. The worldwide sustainment infrastructure, he said, will declare operational capability “in 2020, 2021.”

:

“They need fifth-generation airplanes and they need some fourth-generation airplanes, and they need them soon. So what I think you're going to see the Navy do is buy as many F-35Cs as they can afford, and maybe supplement that with as many other things as they can afford.”

He got a briefing by adults who understand the military abnd exactly how poerful and game changing the aircraft is going to be.

He also finally got a look at the history and forecast of the pricing lowering as full production comesinto play and saw he was going to get what he wanted in any case in terms of price.

The price has been falling the entire tiome...just as the Program and the supplier said it would...and they have been on track to deliver.

He will...just because of who he is...seek to get al little more. And that's just fine. Lockheed will probably give it to him...and they will get more orders as a result.

now Program Manager Awaits Evaluation of Test on Potential Solution to F-35C Nose-Gear Oscillations

The Defense Department’s F-35 program manager said a potential solution to the nose landing gear of the Navy’s F-35C Lightning II joint strike fighter has been tested and is being evaluated by the test community.

Speaking March 22 to an audience at the Defense Programs Conference sponsored by McAleese and Associates and Credit Suisse, Air Force Lt. Gen. Christopher C. Bogdan, program executive officer for the F-35, said that a potential solution has been tested and the land-based launch and recovery test facility at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J.

Bogdan described the problem as occurring during last year’s carrier trials onboard USS George Washington when the F-35C was catapult-launched lightly loaded with fuel and payload. The nose gear would oscillate as the aircraft proceeded down the catapult track, causing the pilot’s helmet to bang against the aircraft canopy.

“It beats up the pilot pretty good,” Bogdan said.

He said the tested proposed solution changed the way the pilot is strapped in the cockpit and the degree to which the bar that engages the catapult sled in engaged.

Bogdan said the problem was minor because in operations the F-35C normally would not launch so lightly loaded. But naval aviators also conduct carrier qualifications with their aircraft in a lightly loaded configuration.

Bogdan said the evaluation of the testers should determine whether the potential solution will suffice or whether a redesign of the nose gear is needed. He is awaiting the testers’ report.

He said he expects the F-35C to conduct more carrier trials this year and in 2018 to determine the success of the fix.

there ya go, the Brat told you it wasn't a biggy unless the airplane is very light, as in carrier quals. This girl is gonna love EMALs and I can't wait to see them on the Ford, where this all works as it was designed to function! Go NAVY!

MADL has a higher information exchange. It's like comparing a simple text message to a full email. There are also issues of data compromise. Because Link 16 is so common it can be listened in to. MADL is line of sight and harder to intercept.

I mean NIF-CA is a sensor network which uses Link16 so I would've thought an F-35 should plug (using its Link16) into the NIF-CA, but apparently it'll work the other way around: they're going to plug the NIF-CA into an F-35 MADL :)

OK it's probably a misunderstanding on my part, but I hope I explained what seemed to me to be strange (and what your generic response didn't seem to cover)

NIF-CA integration of the F35 Aims to use the Lightning in a stealthy mode as a sensor probing enemy forces. it wants to have naval shiping make the strikes from beyond the Horizon. F35 would be flying inside "Denied" airspace where Opposing forces are more likely to have placed Signals and emissions intelligence assets. Link 16 has been pointed to as a non stealthy communications system in the past. It broadcasts on a conventional radio frequency, even if the signal is not decrypted the Direction and distance of the sender can be. As such Stealthy aircraft have used a passive attitude to LINK 16 The F22 Raptor can receive but for a long time could not transmit Link 16 instead it used the Intra-Flight Data Link which only communicates with other Raptors. that was changed but in combat operations it's likely Raptors would go silent on Link 16 and only communicate with other Raptors or F15's with a adaptor module. Only using Link 16 in uncontested airspace.

For F35 and the NIF-CA the same holds true. IF the F35 is flying in contested Airspace probing it would be silent running. Stealthy defencive weapons load using its sensors to feed targeting data to naval assets beyond the horizon.
Link 16 in this mode would be screaming HERE I AM COME ON KILL ME!!!
