I read some Japanese news that the Japanese fleet for the first time felt intimidated as it try to intercept and follow the Liaoning armada, It knows its at disadvantage for the first time.

local newspaper running at feverish pitch calling for F35B carrier capable to counter Chinese carrier.
But its only ordering F35A and only 40 of the them. Regardless if they plan for limited F35B,It will look weak against China planned 6 carriers,

China confirms sole carrier conducted drills in ‘complex conditions’ in South China Sea

SHANGHAI – China’s sole aircraft carrier conducted drills in the South China Sea, the navy said, days after neighboring Taiwan said the carrier and accompanying ships had passed 90 nautical miles south of the island amid renewed tension between the two sides.

The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier and accompanying warships sailed round the east coast of Taiwan in what China called a routine exercise complying with international law.

The carrier’s J-15 fighters conducted flight exercises in “complex sea conditions” on Monday, the People’s Liberation Army Navy said on its official microblog late the same day.

Now this is one heck of ASW helicopter the only problem is too big at 14ton.It won't fit most of Chinese ship except Liaoning and type 55.It has big 360 deg radar on the bottom of heli, sonobuoy,FLIR, Dipping sonar, ECM, Data Link but no MAD, 900 km range,2 torpedoes. what is that red light?

Never until now we had seen the helicopter Z-18F armed, and it's done now. Indeed, several pictures of this anti-submarine warfare variant (ASW) Z-18 was recently posted in a Chinese military forum, showing the bird nearly 14 tons armed with two lightweight torpedo type Yu 7K .

Unveiled for the first time in February 2014 with the appearance of two prototypes, registered 01 and 02 respectively, the Z-18F shed a lot of ink in a context where the ASW air vectors of the Chinese Navy are insufficient, Compared to a fleet of ships that is constantly renewing and modernizing.

However, there are very few elements that have been officially communicated about it, and here are some points that we know.

We know for example that the Z-18F is part of a sub-project of the aircraft carrier program Liaoning . It is expected that the first Chinese aircraft carrier will equip six helicopters of this type, ie half the number of rotating wings on board.

In standard trim Liaoning, air forces are composed of 24 fighter aircraft J-15 AEW helicopters two Z-18J , six helicopters ASW Z-18F and two surveillance helicopters Z-9D .

In addition to its surveillance radar under the nose, the helicopter developed specifically for anti-submarine missions st struggle with a new dipping sonar low frequency, probably the same as the Z-9C , the shape is reminiscent of the American sonar AN / AQS-22 Raytheon.

The openings placed under the rear of its fuselage allow the operators to drop about thirty acoustic buoys to grid the area sought. And the two outer pylons are capable of carrying four torpedoes or anti-ship missiles lighter type YJ-9 .

The platform itself is derived from the new Z-18, which comes in several versions today as the AC313 civilian market, the Z-18A for the Chinese army, or the Z-18J AEW.

Note that the development of the main radar Z-18J started before 2009, a sign that the Chinese navy had anticipated the composition of the battle group around the aircraft carrier Liaoning , before the transformation work is started.

Two Z-18 standard transport version and two Z-9D on the Liaoning aircraft carrier.

With the imposing size of Z-18F - 23 meters long once the composite rotor blades are deployed - few Chinese first-line vessels are capable of receiving it on deck. But as AVIC has not yet proposed other heavy-duty platforms offering comparable autonomy of about 900 km and a carrying capacity of up to 4 tonnes, the Z-18F is still the best available choice For the Chinese Navy.

Pure carrier vs carrier of the old days won't happen if there's a new Sino-Japanese war come to pass, carriers and and its air wing will only be part of the total package - unless such engagement take place far from both Chinese and Japanese waters, like all the way off the coast of East Africa.

Alas, this is probably the first time the Japanese had a battlegroup of such size that's not the USN's sailed past them.

GEAT Pic. Been waiting a good while to see a decent ASW helo for the PLAN with range and armament.

I wonder if she can carry four, like AW-101 Merlin:

Not with that short rack for sure, and you know payload. Next would be how much tradeoff this'd have on the Z-18F in the endurance department, assuming the Chinese ASW package is bulkier and heavier than their Western counterpart that is.
Bring an extra destroyer or two to carry the extra load of Z-18F. The aircraft carrier doesn't have to carry all of the CVG major helicopter units.
